Title: Carl Gotthelf Hofmann & Charlotte Alvina Shafer
Post by: btrappes on Thursday 21 November 19 04:16 GMT (UK)
Looking for parents & siblings (lf any) of Carl Gotthelf Hofman born 19 November 1842 possibly in Zwickau, Saxony, and his wife Charlotte Alvina Shafer born 15 June 1840.
Emigrated to Melbourne Australia on the Liguria around 1880 / 1883.
Any info very much appreciated as I've hit the proverbial brick wall!

WOW!
Such a quick response...thank you.
Much appreciated :-)
Carl And Charlotte both died in Southern Tasmania:
Carl died 29 September 1922

Charlotte died  23 Nov 1914 in believe at New Norfolk Tasmania.

Can I ask where you found this information, and do you have any further info on Carl or Charlottes ancestors, where they lived (I believe Zwickau, but I think they lived elsewhere in Germany before Zwickau). etc?
They were my great grandparents, their daughter Alma being my grandmother.
Diference in spelling makes things difficult....Carl & Charlotte both spelt Hofmann with 1x"f" and 2x "NN".

Adelaide should be Adeline, daughter of the Cleavers, Bothwell Tasmania.
Apart from Zwickau, I also have Zwikien in Saxony...not sure if they are the same place or not as I haven't found a Zwikien, but certainly Zwickau exists.

Immigration from UNASSISTED passenger here: https://prov.vic.gov.au/

Pity they didn’t stay in VIC, as records are relatively easy to find.

In Memoriam for Carl, 1st column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article23701764

The mother’s death: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article10394361

Folk searching may want to look for her as Alvina Charlotte Schafer.

What happened to the other children who arrived with them, who aren’t mentioned in the Memoriam?

Birth of their son Richard in TAS 1884, with mother’s mmn spelt SCHAFER:

Richard died in 1888.

Carl’s naturalisation, 16 April 1896, says he was from SAXONY, in the Empire of Germany. He moved to TAS in 28 February, 1883.

Thanks so much for all the information, some of which I had, and some of which I didn't.
I had noticed incidents of Charlottes first & second names being reversed, and changes in spelling of Shafer and Schafer.....makes searching so much more difficult. On the naturalisation certificates the name is Hoffmann, but the signatures are Hofmann.
Hofmanns married into the Forster family here in Tasmania, and a (Forster) relative has travelled to Zwickau in Saxony to research both Forster & Hofmann families, but found very little information, thus concluding that Hofmanns had spent little time in Zwickau, and were probably from somewhere else in Germany originally.
Also have the place name Zwikien Saxony on one of the naturalisation certificates, but can't locate Zwikien on a German map.
The other Children: Richard died early. Max never married. Charles married & had a daughter Vera Belle Hofmann. He died in a quarry accident. Alma married Thomas William Harris, my grandfather. Agnes (Maria) married into the Eiszele family. The rest I'm still looking for. I have copies of naturalisation certificates for all the boys, but not the girls.

I had a look through the Zwickau address books from 1845 to 1885 for Hofmann/Hoffmann
Both spelling variations can be found in Zwickau.

In 1854
Hoffmann, Töpfer (potter)
Hoffmann, Polizeidiener (policeman)
Hofmann, Wasserbauconducteur (water engineer)
Hofmann, Lehrer (teacher)
Hofmann, Gastwirt (inn keeper/landlord)
Hofmann, emirierte Pastor (retired parson)

This has nothing to do with your query, just proves that both spellings were common.

I searched for Carl Gotthelf Hofmann in the address books from Zwickau.

all i could find was an entry from 1875
C. G. Hofmann, Colonialwaarengeschäft, Scheergasse 579 in Zwickau

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_goods

the same person was not in the address book from 1885 which could fit with his date of emmigration

This is a long shot but he could have something to do with your family

Thank you so much Davecapps.
You have hit the jackpot so to speak!
I have heard of the documentation you have kindly posted, but never seen it....nor did I know where to look for it.
Really grateful for your response!
If only I could find where they lived prior to Zwickau.

The only other possible lead I have is that they were connected with "Eisenhauer" family at some earlier stage, but this is a bit of a long shot  :(

Davecapps...
Could you please send me the URL to those entries?
I looked on the address book & could only find Buttner at that address.
I'd really like copies of those original jpgs you posted
Must confess that I'm not overly profficient on how to use the address book  :(
Thanks
Bruce

HI Bruce

Here´s the link to the Sachsen/Saxony newspapers.

https://adressbuecher.sachsendigital.de/suchergebnisse/adressbuch/Book/search////cache.off

use the drop down lists to choose the place and year, then type in the name Hofmann.
ie. Zwickau, 1875, Hofmann

the search result gives you the first name on the page that was found, here Hochmuth
click on Hochmut and then scroll down the page untill you find Hofmann.

if you have no success let me know, i have screen shots of all i finds.

Dave

Thanks very much for the information Dave.
The CG Hofmann you kindly found in Zwickau is not the same address my relative has (I don't have access to that address as yet), but she believes the address you found is possibly the father of "my" Carl Gotthelf Hofmann.
I'm also told that many records before 1875 in Zwickau have still not been digitised, so I guess one really needs to go there to delve further into family connections...provided you have a good understanding of German, which sadly I don't.
So frustrating....
