I've unsuccessfully attempted to trace a Herbert Greenwood a teamster (wagon driver) of Hebden Hey or any family. He is quoted in a newspaper report of an inquest in Sept 1939
Houses near Hebden Hey are called Greenwood, but searches in Hebden Bridge are records don't throw up any matches for the family name.
I'm very new to all this, Hebden Hey was swept away after the war and replaced by a scout campsite and their halls/bunkhouses.

We are not permitted to look up the 1939 register for you. But there are 11 Herbert Greenwood s showing in the free part of the index for the Hebden Royd Urban District, which I think would include Hebden Hey. (Wouldn’t it?).
The 1939 register is available on FindMyPast and Ancestry, but I believe the FindMyPast one is more likely to be up to date as far as unlocking locked entries goes.

Hebden Bridge, and Hebden Royd, both fall under the Todmorden Registration District.
So this death looks to be the one:
September qtr 1939
Todmorden Registration District vol 9a, page 415
Greenwood, Herbert Age 67
That would put his birth around 1872?

Thanks to both of you. Several family members visited our grandfather's death site separately to mark 80 years. We have yet to establish if the witness who found him was linked to the family or by chance had the grandfather's middle name. The more you discover the more questions are unearthed.
It all needs time, something rather scarce with work and other projects. But thanks for sharing.

Are you concerned that the person who died in 1939 is a mismatch for your grandfather? What does the inquest report say?
As you probably know, there were/are Greenwoods galore in the area.
-
Hi
There is no concern about a mismatch. A Herbert Greenwood reported finding the body of Herbert Greenwood Preston. There are uncertain recollections as to HGP having family connections to Hebden Bridge and to what may have happened on that sad day/day before. Sadly this is cousins attempting to pierce together recollections of things they remember my uncle saying about what was a tragic event, that cast a long shadow.
When I have time I will follow up the new leads. Thank you

The man who found him was not named Herbert Greenwood. He was
Edwin Ruskin Greenwood, teamer, of Wood Hey cottage, Hebden Bridge

Could Malcolm Bull's excellent "Calderdale Companion" site be of any use here?
