Title: Carpenters and Joiners Haworth and Shipley?
Post by: JPRESTON on Sunday 10 November 19 19:40 GMT (UK)
My great Grandfather Johnson Preston 1852-1916 was part of a joinery/woodworker in a yard in Haworth, other than the yard is now converted or  built over as housing I know very little. I believe amongst their work were some of the shop fronts in the town. My Dad always insisted that slot head screws were always afixed in line "chapel standard"

Later my great Aunt c 1940 married a Mr Arnold Wright and this brought into the family a set of carpenters tools marked  I J Wright.

Any suggest where I might find more about these two people/companies.

I'm not sure if this is the same man, but he is in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph 20 December 1879 in a list of Liquidations.

Johnson Preston, of Oxenhope, Yorkshire, joiner.

I'm not familiar with the area but maps tell me Oxenhope is close to Haworth  :)

Have you got the marriage certificate, so that you can try an find the connection between I J Wright and Arnold Wright?

 (What was her name?)

Added:
Did Johnson marry twice, both times to an Emma? Or three times?

On 1871, a cotton band maker, unmarried, living with parents etc.
On 1881 census he is married but working in Warwickshire.
ON 1891 (Ancestry has him as Poston) he is a joiner in a Worsted Mill.
On 1901 he is Joiner and Cabinet Maker, own account, living at 60 Prince Street
On 1911, verger - Church of England.

The censuses are only a snapshot, and he may have worked in the yard from just after the 1891 census to just before the 1911 census, but it does not show long continuous employment in the same business.

In 1900 Johnson Preston, age 49, widower, master joiner, married Emma Preston, widow.  His father was Robert Preston, joiner, hers James Wood, joiner.

IJ Wright tools is probably from Isaac J Wright, unless it is from 2 brothers, or father and son, etc.

However, we do not know where they have travelled from, or when.

Similarly directories or newspaper snippets for him?

Thanks for these helpful leads,I'll share with my cousin who has built the tree so far.  Yes Johnson did marry twice to women called Emma.

No work has been done as far as we know on the Wright family, there were no children from that marriage. I have the tools as my father cleared the house.

In 1939 ER's I can see Edith Smith, Frances Isabella Smith, and Fred Smith living at 3 Alton Grove, Shipley.

She is with Martha and Frances in 1935. and with Martha, Frances, Fred (jnr) and Fred (sen) in 1932 at same address.

If she is 21 or above in 1932, then born 1911 or before.

This looks like Frances

Frances Isabel Smith mmn Laxton
GRO Reference: 1897 June Quarter in Bradford

so Edith
Edith Smith mmn Laxton
GRO Reference: 1893  September quarter in BRADFORD

which makes her 49 at marriage.

Think you need her marriage certificate for more information on Arnold.
