So, I have some direct ancestral connections to Huntingdonshire via my great-great-great grandparents, Thomas John Goodes (born 4/27/1797 in Great Gidding, died 9/15/1845 in Rootstown, Ohio, USA). He married an Ann Buswell/Boswell? of Bythorn - born 5/10/1795 in Bythorn, died 8/5/1867 in Rootstown.
I have some confusion about whether the surname is Boswell or Buswell. My great-great grandfather (their son) is listed as William "Boswell" Goodes, born 1833 in Wilmington, Delaware, USA.
I have scant information on the Buswells of Huntingdonshire, other than Ann's parents were a John Buswell and a Mary (maiden name unknown). I would love to know more about that family line and where it derives.
Additionally, I know little about the Goodes family, other than Thomas John's parents were a Thomas Goodes and an Elizabeth Ayers, of Little Stukely and Elton, respectively. My understanding also is that Goodes is a fairly unusual surname.
I would really love to get beyond these brick walls on my mother's maternal lines. She did extensive research prior to computers and the internet, but I think she got stuck as well. I think she would be excited if I am able to finally get some answers on her family history.
Thank you!

Hi Margaret,
Thank you for all of this information. I apologize for the delay in responding; I just noticed that you had sent me additional information.
With your great assistance and research, I am starting to break through some of these long-standing brickwalls.
I have something else that I am puzzling over with regard to one of my Goodes ancestors. I have Thomas Goodes (1750-1830), married to his second wife, Elizabeth Ayers/Ayres (1754-1820). They are my 4x great-grandparents. I have his father listed as a William Goodes (born 1711 with no death date). I have had no spouse listed for William, yet another brick wall.
I have some matches on Ancestry who I notice are now listing a Mary Lucas as wife to William Goodes. I have not seen any source information listed for that marriage. I am very hesitant to add her name as a direct ancestor without any proof. I believe William is also out of Little Stukeley or Great Gidding in Huntingdonshire.
Also, my 3x great-grandfather, Thomas John Goodes (1797 - 1845), is the ancestor who left Great Gidding to emigrate to Rootstown, in Portage County, Ohio. His wife, per my records, was Ann Buswell
(1795 - 1867) out of Bythorn, Huntingdonshire. For some reason, they named their son, my 2x great-grandfather, William Boswell Goodes. This has caused a lot of confusion. :-)
Again, thank you so very much for your assistance and fabulous research. It is greatly appreciated.
Jennifer

I regret I can't help you beyond the link I have already cited. The understanding is that the name Buswell evolved from Boswell, which itself evolved from Bosville, Boseville, Beuzeville, Bosvil, etc. Spelling was a bit random in the good old days.
