Hey everyone
I am hoping someone can help with this.
I have traced some of my family members to New Zealand and have been in touch with them. Bit of a long story but a sister of my grandad’s was taken there by a family member when she was 3 and I only found out about her during my research into my family.
Her sons have found a family bible with ‘Robert Hayes 1868’ on the front of it and none of them have a clue why it is in their possession.
Inside the bible is a note of marriage of Robert Hayes to Jane Brown in 27 November 1873 at Killinchy Presbyterian Church by Rev. David R. Moore.
There is also a note of 2 births - James Finlay Hayes and Thomas Hayes. There is no additional info other than their names. I have found a birth for James via family search - James Finlay Hay (not Hayes) born 17 August 1874 at Killyleagh. Parents are Robert Hay and Jane Brown Hay. I am assuming Thomas Hayes is also their child but I can’t find a thing for him.
My newly discovered NZ family have no idea how this bible came into their possession. They have no clue who Robert Hayes and his family are.
Through my previous research, I know my 3 x great grandmother was Elizabeth Hayes. She was born about 1836 in Killinchy, Co. Down. She married James McClure in Killinchy (at same church as Robert & Jane) in 1857. She moved to NZ with her husband around 1861. My NZ family were not aware of her or any connection to Hayes or McClure families until I found them about 2 months ago and told them what I had discovered.
Despite constant searching I can’tfind who Robert’s parents were. I know Elizabeth Hayes’ parents were Thomas Hayes, born abt. 1815, Ballymacreely and Mary McMillan born abt. 1821, Co. Down. They married 18 May 1837 again at Killinchy Presbyterian Church.
I have a feeling Robert who’s bible
my family has found is the brother of Elizabeth Hayes but I am having serious trouble finding anything out.
Would anyone have any pointers for me please?
Any help would be much appreciated

Aghadowey! Wow. I am shocked and so happy at what you have managed to find where I have failed miserably despite searching and searching.
It does look like my 3 x great grandmother, Elizabeth Hayes and Robert Hayes were siblings as they seem to share the same parents.
I was born and raised in Glasgow and still live there. So it is strange than Robert Hayes was here too before he got married.
I will need to look into that & see if I can find him in a census.
Thank you so, so much for all of this info you have provided me with. It is much appreciated.
God only knows how this family bible ended up in the hands of my NZ family who knew nothing of their mother’s origins.
Thank you!

Thank you for info on the additional family members who could also be related to me.
I will have a wee look into those.
You have been so, so helpful.
Thank you so much again

My Hayes family are from Killinchy as well but unrelated to yours as far as I know. There is an Ancestry tree belonging to kinnigit with your family in it - is that yours?

Hey Sunnyhill
That is interesting that you come from the Hayes from Killinchy. I wonder if we could find a link to each other?
The whole Hayes story is a bit of mystery to me. One that I am slowly unravelling but it has lead to more questions than answers.
The kinnigit profile on Ancestry is a distant relative of mine who lives in New Zealand. She is related to me through my great, great grandfather John Hayes McClure who was born in Killinchy Ireland. She is a descendant of John's brother. She wasn't aware of John or his descendants. John Hayes McClure's parents were Elizabeth Hayes and James McClure who left Killinchy, Ireland in about 1860 and went to NZ. My 2 x great grandfather John Hayes McClure was born in Killinchy before they left to go to NZ but for some strange reason they never took him with them. I can't find what year he was born despite searching and searching for his birth.
John Hayes McClure's sons Thomas and Robert ended up moving to NZ in about 1922 but we don't think they were aware that their father's parents and his brothers and sisters were all over there. I know that the descendants of John Hayes McClure's siblings were not aware of him (John) at all. This is why it is puzzling that Thomas (John's son) ended up having the family bible that belonged to Robert Hayes. None of Thomas' descendants were aware of who the Hayes were or their link to Killinchy in Ireland and also Killinchy in NZ.
I have been trying to solve the mystery of why my 2 x great grandfather wasn't taken to NZ with his parents and how he ended up in Scotland and marrying a Scottish girl in 1882.

Hi Icar
Just sent you a pm.
Looking at your cousin's tree, he / she has your Thomas b abt 1815 as son of Robert Hay and Mary Spratt. I have been in touch with @Colinm on here whose ancestors are also this Robert and Mary. His family also migrated to New Zealand though I think he doesn't have them having son Thomas. I can put you in touch with him if you like.
I sent you a link to my Ancestry tree but my ancestor James Gourley Hayes b 1827 Ballymacreelly [Killinchy] had father Archibald who I estimate was b abt 1790. He would be the right vintage to be brother of Robert m Mary Spratt but no evidence for connection except they also had a son Archibald.
Best wishes
David

The Thomas HAY in kinnigit's tree is assumed to be a son of Robert HAY and Mary SPRATT based on multiple DNA matches to descendants of their son Archibald HAY and daughter Elizabeth BOWMAN nee HAY.
My actual connection to these HAY HAYES people is through my cousin's maternal McCLURE line, I am not a blood relation.

Hi,
I have Susannah HOGG born to William HOGG & Mary Ann McBRATNEY ( married 1831 Killinchy) who emigrated to NZ 1863 aged 20y with her brother Robert, 19y. Other siblings were already there and they all feature in many newspaper articles on Paperspast. Their brother, Thomas HOGG, arrived 08 Oct 1861 on the same ship, The Royal Stuart, as James McCLURE, wife and child and also P HAYES, wife & chd.
Two HOGG cousins, sons of Hamilton HOGG ( shoemaker) from Killinchy, settled in Christchurch..Thomas HOGG, a shoemaker and James HOGG a miller.
Susannah married George McCLURE on 25 Nov 1870 (wit: Robert HOGG, farmer of Leeston and Sarah McCLURE of Leeston, spinster) and settled in Killinchy, Selwyn, Canterbury, NZ, where they had a number of children. Susannah died 1908. I have her marriage and death cert but not George's death cert but he died 04 Sep 1918 in his 79th year in a terrible car accident after a tree fell on his car. According to findagrave he was born 14 Aug 1838. From a cemetery record, he was the son of David & Jane, nee CRAIG McCLURE who died in the same area. Ros DAVIES site has more clues. George was a friend of Wm GABBIE who emigrated May 1860. George arrived Dec 1860.
I think William HOGG is one of the youngest sons of James HOGG b 1754 died 1816 Ballymacreely, and Susannah HAY b abt 1762, died 1808 Ballymacreely ( both buried Killinchy with 3 young children..see the amazing Ros Davies site).
My brother has a dna match to someone descended from a HAY who has posted here before :)
So I just had a look for Trees and see Kinnigit has this family!! Small world:) Hi Kinnigit!
The names, Susannah and Eleanor/Ellen appear in many branches of the HOGG families. Possibly HAY names
I am descended from James HOGG, a weaver whose wife is still a mystery, but I have dna matches to his brother Jacob, a baker, probably in Ballynahinch and they are (must be?) children of James HOGG & Susannah HAY. My Great G/M was Susannah HOGG.
I hope this has helped, late to the party though I may be !

Hey Kiwi007
It is lovely to hear from someone who has a connection to this family.
It was myself who originally submitted this post. My 2 x great grandfather was John Hayes McClure, son of James McClure and Elizabeth Hayes. James and Elizabeth immigrated to NZ without John. He was left behind and raised, my guess, by Elizabeth’s mum & dad. I think John was James & Elizabeth’s illegitimate child.
I have found poor law records for John in Glasgow. He goes between naming his parents as James McClure & Elizabeth Hayes and Thomas Hayes and Mary McMillan. I know Thomas and Mary were Elizabeth’s parents.
John’s son Robert Hay McClure ended up living with Thomas Hayes and Mary McMillain in Killinchy, Ireland. He appears on the 1901 census living with Thomas but he is calling himself Robert Hay. He signed Thomas Hayes’ death registration in 1901.
I have done the ancestry dna test. My dna matches up with loads of McClure descendants in NZ. Barely any of them have my John in their tree. I guess he was never spoken about to his other siblings. Which is such a shame. It has led to many of them ignoring my messages or not believing that my John is related to them.
There is confusion over the parents of James McClure who was married to Elizabeth Hayes. It looks like there were two James McClures born in Killinchy, Ireland at the same time. One was born to David McClure and Jane Craig, the other was born to David McClure and Elizabeth Stott. I think I am from the David McClure/ Elizabeth Stott line.
It would be interesting to know if my dna matches with your brother. I have a tree on ancestry but I have made it private. I was coming across the strange phenomenon of name collectors. People would pinch photos, certificates etc from my tree and add them to people in their tree who have nothing to do with me. They would then add all the siblings for that person off my tree to their’s when it was wrong info.
Thank you so much for commenting on this post
Leanne

Hi Leanne
You have done an amazing job working out who John belongs to. There are so many Johns and McCLURES!
I agree about having to make a Tree private. I had a couple of hideous experiences, one woman even has my father on her Tree despite having no idea how we have a very distant dna link..told me her Tree was scrappy, but has 25,000 people on it and locked!
My brother isn't on ancestry but is on Gedmatch, Ancestry doesn't have a chromosome browser so anyone interested in this has to load their kits onto Gedmatch. There is a petition on changedotorg begging ancestry to relent but it needs a few more signatures.
Ancestry wiped all dna matches with less than 7cM, so when we get back to the early 1800's etc, we are only lucky to get a match on ancestry. We can search as low as 3cM on Gedmatch. Its still difficult, but finding out the exact chromosome the dna match is on is vital, especially with so few records to help us.
I just clicked on all 25 Tree owners for James McCLURE and I don't have a dna match with anyone. I have previously done it for George & Susannah nee HOGG's Trees. An eye glazing exercise, but worth it if a match looms up!
Let me know if you decide to upload your dna kit to Gedmatch..make sure you keep the Gedmatch kit number in a safe place. You will be surprised how many times you use Gedmatch once on there ( and understand how it works LOL)
Cheers

Hello Leanne,
I'm wondering if there is a link in your family to the George & Elizabeth (nee Hogg) McClure, mentioned above as I have them in my tree and would love to add your line if there is.
Thanks, Kirsten

Hi Kiwi007,
I'm working on my family tree and I have a connection to the McClure family in NZ. I was searching and came across these posts. Thought I'd say Hi. I'm hoping to see how this all fits together.
Kind regards, Kirst

Hi Kirst
Nice to hear from you!
I see you are on Gedmatch...its a chromosome browser and lets you know which chromosome you match on with whoever you are checking.
E.G: Choose ' one to many' to the right of your log in page, then click on the "A" to the left of one of your matches Gedmatch has found for you and up comes a page with noth your kit numbers..scroll to the bottom and hit 'compare',,it will show all your chromosomes and which bits you match with your DNA match. At the bottom, it will tell you how many generations back your common ancestor is.
If your click on the kit number to the left of "A" of that DNA match, you will see all THEIR DNA matches...this is handy to check, perhaps more easily who they have that you might recognise
Start with close cousins to get the hang of it...you will see certain people come up on the same chromosome in the same spot ( genomic position)...you need to write all the info down as you go.
I have found Gedmatch finds you matches but sometimes, even if that person is on say My Heritage or Ancestry, they don't come up as a match on those other sites. This makes the job so frustrating.
You can also run the "People who match both or 1 of 2 kits" test ( on log in page)...this gives you people who are connected to you..you might be related to one person who you share an ancestor with, and the other is related to the other ancestor (W or H), for example.. Gedmatch has videos to watch for a better explanation!!
Are you descended from George and Susannah nee HOGG? If so, I would love to see if we are DNA match. I haven't found any yet to this line
Cheers
-
Hi,
I don't know that I am on Gedmatch, sorry, I'm not really sure what it is. Am I better to send you a direct message to chat further? I am a descended from David McClure and Jane Craig, from Hans Lamont McClure, brother of George McClure who married Susannah Hogg.
Thanks
-
Sorry Kirst..I read the message the wrong way around! The Gedmatch comment was by someone else who you replied to!...if you have taken a test then it is a great idea to load it onto Gedmatch..its free too! Ancestry doesn't offer a chromosome browser but does have quite good search facilities for DNA matching
https://classic.gedmatch.com/login1.php
The other place thats free is FTDNA..good for finding matches too. The site is a bit basic but its always good to get our DNA in lots of places to find that elusive match that gives us all the answers ( haha).
Cheers

Thanks, that makes sense now. I haven't actually taken a DNA test as yet although I am wondering about doing so. Would you recommend one place over another or are they similar. I'd be hoping to achieve a reasonable cost too.
Would it seem that we share the same ancestors?
Cheers
-
Hi Kirst
I am from the HOGG side of the family, so we wont share any DNA, unless more cousins married cousins than I am aware of!
With regards which DNA test to get...I have figured out that its probably best to get the Ancestry test as this test can be loaded up to other DNA sites for free ( mostly ) whereas Ancestry will not accept other companies tests.
I took 2 before I knew what I was doing..Ancestry and My Heritage. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Always make up a Tree for any of the sites as this helps in all sorts of ways.
Ancestry has ' Thrulines' which pulls up DNA matches that look like they belong to a particular ancestor...however, this is only as good as the Trees online..I have hundreds of DNA matches but they haven't got a Tree on ancestry so they don't get into Thrulines...or they have made a big mistake in their Tree etc...but for those with good research, its rather exciting to see my ancestors siblings descendents all set out in a Tree as done by Thrulines. Also Ancestry has, generally, the better Trees to research. It seems to like to frustrate researchers though ( eg, won't count how many matches they have found, whereas MH does! Won't give us a chromosome browser, a basic genealogy tool etc)
My Heritage groups your matches per genomic position on the chromosome. This is really a great tool, however, lots of work always needs to be done on a person if you want to get right into the nitty gritty...I am too old to bother LOL...Trees on MH are usually a disappointment. I usually grab whatever clue is available and head back to Ancestry to research the person.
Gedmatch has some great tests to run for fun ( in my case) and will match your DNA matches with you...MH & Ancestry often fail. I have found many DNA matches on Gedmatch who are also on either Ancestry or MH, yet do not come up as a match on those sites. I trust Gedmatch more :)
If you need further help, feel free to PM me.
Cheers

Thanks so much, really appreciate the insight. I am hoping for a special DNA price to come up :) Thank you again.

Hi, don't have any new information to add, but my great, great, great grandfather was William Gabbie.
