Title: Legerwood Cemetery
Post by: JuneNZ on Sunday 27 October 19 08:15 GMT (UK)
Can anyone advise me where to find the names of the people buried at the Legerwood Cemetery during the mid 1800’s. I know that the headstones have been recorded but the family that I am looking for is not on this database.

Many thanks, June

Hi
Borders Family History Society offers a transcription of the burial records of Legerwood and Earlston 1784-1854 for GBP 4.35. It weighs 160gms so postage to New Zealand would be GBP 6.50.
Regards,
Lesley
NB I do not own this publication and have no connection with the Society.

I am looking for Adam Halliday in particular., born 1818. Have found his name spelt Holliday as well in official records. His Mother Marrion (May) Robertson is in the Gordon Cemetery records and I believe it could be his father George in the Parish of Cranston, they lived at Greenknowe prior to May’s death.

A very kind lady from the Borders Society has looked in their records and cannot see Adam detailed :(
He was born in Haddingtonshire, Pentcaitland and appears to have lived at Masterson Mains in the 1841 census and Bathgate in the 1851 census. If it is the same person then his occupation changed from Ag Lab to Carter.

Family lore has him being kicked by a horse at an Agricultural Show and expiring however we are also considering any other scenario such as leaving the area. His wife Margaret Stephenson appears to have spent much of her life in care. Their son William emigrated to Tasmania and then New Zealand, he brought his three sisters, Margaret, Marion and Agnes to NZ in 1864. The children’s birthdates span 1839 to 1849 (maybe to 1852) although we cannot find the official record for Agnes who was said to have been born around the time of her fathers demise.

A little bad behaviour would have been helpful to put them into official records!

Regards, June

Thank you very much for your interest and research Alan  :D. This gives us a new line to follow. Adam Halliday that we are looking for, born1818, had a brother James born 27/12/1819, his wife in family history research is recorded as Anne McLeish (I wonder if this is correct!)

Robertson:  Adam and James Mother was Marrion Robertson, their father was George Halliday, a Ploughman.

Stephenson:  Adam born 1818 married Margaret Dickson Tinto Stephenson, although the birth record is the only place that the middle names are used.

Family lore had James Halliday living in the Lauder area and working part time at Berkinside/Burn Castle.

Again my thanks, June

I have just looked up Robert Halliday on Scotlands People. There is a birth 1869 and also a death with the Mothers Surname listed as MacLeish in 1869 at Channelkirk.

The Cemetery Headstone Inscription that you have provided to us is appearing more and more likely to be the correct family for James Halliday brother of Adam Halliday. I note that in one of the Census reports James of West Mains had a daughter Marion living at home aged 30.

Researching the name Halliday in Scotland is similar to searching for a Smith surname! The Halliday name seems quite common whereas in New Zealand it is not nearly so common.

This research is giving me a very good knowledge of this part of Scotland  ;)

I should also mention that in the census return James gave his place of birth as Foulstruther which is correct to fit into the family of George Halliday.
