Title: Help with burial in Leith
Post by: baggies023 on Tuesday 15 October 19 20:43 BST (UK)
Hello,
I'd like some advice on locating where my G grandmother Victoria May Currie (Drewitt) maiden name, is buried or cremated.

She died on 30th November 1942 at 736 Ferry Road Leith, Edinburgh.
She was 42 was when she died. Born in Camberwell London in 1901.
On her death certificate the district states Haymarket.
I have contacted MortonHall Edinburgh and they unfortunately have no records for her.
I have also contacted some private cemetries within the area too,
Mount Veron, Seafield, Warriston pierhill & Eastern and Dean, still no records of her.
She is proving to be a bit of a mystery!

Struggling to find her!
Is there any where else, I could possibly search?
Surely there has to be some records somewhere!
Is there some chance she could of gone back to London?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Have you looked for a funeral notice in a newspaper?

I have gone on The BNA - Edinburgh evening news is only dated to August 1942, sadly.
I have put searches in, but no luck unfortunately.

Hi
The thread title is "Burial in Leith"

What docs have you that she lived in Leith?         What docs have you that she moved to Leith?

Would you confirm what docs you have proving she was born in London?

AND

Provide full content . . . . . ?

I guess that we are all attempting to check your theoretical links

Please save us all repeating the research and give us the synopsis (with refs and full details) ?
( what a waste of repeated effort that would be, asking us to make the same mistakes . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  )

Thanks

File size to large!
Sorry, unsure of what to do.

Using my phone, as I don't have laptop access.

Hi baggies023,

I live only a few minutes from 736 Ferry Road, Edinburgh. It is what we call locally the Davidsons Mains end of the Ferry Road and therefore not actually in Leith. They would have fairly new council  houses in 1942. Regarding Haymarket - that is Registration District where your great grandmother's death was registered. Haymarket is in the centre of Edinburgh at the West End. Perhaps whoever registered her death found it more convenient to go there rather than use the one at the other end of Ferry Road which is actually in Leith.

If she was cremated it would have been either at Warriston or Seafield as Mortonhall is a fairly recent one.

If she was buried it could have been at any of the Edinburgh Cemeteries although Rosebank Cemetery at Pilrig would probably have been the nearest one. It is not on your list so may be worth trying.

As said by GR2 an obituary would be your best bet. As the BNA for the Edinburgh Evening News online only goes up to August of that year perhaps you could contact the Evening News directly to see if they can help. It is still in existence.

Good luck with your search,

Dorrie

Who registered the death as it may hold a clue as to a possibility of her being taken back down South?

Annie

Add...Have you found her in England 1939?

Thank you Dorrie for your information.
I contacted the above email address with hope in finding information on my G grandmother.

I read that Edinburgh council owns & manages 39 cemeteries .

On my first post, I called it Mortonhall Edinburgh, I now know, that Mortonhall is the Crematorium, not the place where I emailed.

According to the gentleman at Edinburgh council no data, was found for Victoria Currie.
So, I wonder, if that's all 39 council owned cemeteries checked.

The council guy kindly sent me a list of the privately owned cemeteries, to which I emailed, and had no luck!

In all fairness, that's a lot of cemeteries! Which leads me question, is she in Scotland.

Thank you Annie.

My G grandfather's name is on the death certificate,  Robinson Currie born 12 December 1901
He served in the Merchant Navy all his life until he retired in 1958
He remarried again in 1948 and moved to Bangor, North Wales.
Taking my grandmother with him, my grandmother was the youngest sibling of 7 children.
I have family in Edinburgh still, to this day.
3 siblings stayed and lived in Edinburgh,
2 moved to Canada and another in Birmingham.
But unfortunately, my grandmother'
s generation of siblings have now all sadly passed away.
Leaving us with unanswered questions and nobody knowing.

Victoria's family lived in Bermondsey.
27 Linsey Street.
I did find a baptism record
Dated 21 April 1901
Bermondsey St James, Southwalk,
Showing Father : Fredrick John Drewitt
Mother : Alice Maud Mary Drewitt

I haven't come across the 1939 census for her yet.
I did find voting list showing her living at 31 Primrose Street Edinburgh in 1935.

Hmmmm.

The original regulations were quite specific that a death had to be registered in the registration district in which it occurred. That has now been changed (I was able to register in Queensferry a death that occurred in North Leith in 2011) but I don't think it had been changed by 1942.

Haymarket registration district seems to have had a variety of boundaries. In particular, I see from https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/files//research/statutory-registers/RD-guide-Edinburgh.pdf that the Corstorphine and Cramond registration districts were abolished in 1932, and by 1942 there were only Haymarket, St Andrew, Canongate and Portobello, St Giles, George Square, Newington, Morningside and Leith. Haymarket registration district, which was only created in 1930, must therefore have been extended by 1942 to include among other areas Corstorphine and Cramond.

What about Corstorphine Hill Cemetery.  Quite close to Davidson's Mains.

Hello Hibee,
I believe Corstorphine Hill Cemetery is council owned.
39 cemeteries in Edinburgh are owned & managed by the council.
Had all the council owned & managed ones already checked for records.
No luck unfortunately!
Thank you

In the 1939/1940 Electoral Register for Edinburgh she was living at 20 Royston Mains Avenue. Her husband Robinson is also listed.

This address is very near to where she died in Ferry Road.

No help with her burial sorry.

Thank you Dorrie.
I'm pretty sure, my grandmother mentioned Royston Mains school.
Would that be close to where they lived?
Does that school still exist  ?
Interesting
Thanks

Unfortunately Royston Primary School was knocked down a few years ago but it was only a short distance from Royston Mains Avenue.

Are you on Ancestry? There are a number of trees there with Victoria and Robinson along with photographs.

Still no luck with her burial.

Dorrie

Aww, it's been knocked down!
 Such a pitty that!

I'm hoping to visit Edinburgh, at some point next year.
I haven't been since I was a kid.

I'd like to visit the places I've found while doing my research.

Places like :  Ferry Road & Primrose street, and many others.

Ooh and Edinburgh castle!
Is that where the Scotland National Museum is ?
My 2 x great Uncle Peter Currie - he was a district gunner - his medals are kept there.
I did manage to find information on the Museum web page.

"Press photograph of Sergeant Peter Currie, as District Gunner, showing the one o'clock gun to a group of U.S. Navy sailors, c. 1950"

I would love to see this photo of him and view his medals.

I did try searching the old archives papers.

But haven't found nothing yet!

Yes, I'm on Ancestry. :))

But, the icing on the cake.. would be to finally find, where my Great Grandmother is buried or cremated.
All I can do is keep searching!

Thank you Dorrie, for your information.
Appreciated.

The Scottish National Museum is in Chambers Street but the Scottish National War Memorial is in Edinburgh Castle so that is perhaps where your 2 x great uncle Peter's medals are.

Unfortunately, both Primrose Street and Corruna Place have been demolished and are now housing/work units. Lots of old Leith has changed.

Anyway, enjoy your visit and Ferry Road it is still standing as is Royston Mains Avenue.

Keep searching and you never know someday you may find out where your Great Grandmother is buried. I always feel that by doing our research we keep their memory alive.

Best wishes,

Dorrie

Thank you, so much Dorrie.
I'll keep searching, until I find her!
Your right, hopefully, one day.

I have a good feeling about it.

Indeed, keeps their memory alive

Best wishes
