I am trying to trace the marriage of Edward Green & Ann Curtis. They appear in the 1871-1911 censuses, living in Billinghay, near Sleaford. Listed on the censuses are five of their children - Sarah Jane, born June quarter of 1868, William Edward, born Sept quarter of 1871, Lucy Ann, born Sep quarter of 1873, John, born March quarter of 1876 and William, born Sept quarter of 1878.
The GRO online index gives their mother's maiden surname as 'Curtis', except for William Edward, given as 'Cart'. There is a step-daughter, Ellen Carr, aged 8 on the 1871 Census, but there is no entry on the GRO online index in this name, only an Ellen Curtis, born March quarter of 1863 with no mother's maiden surname given.
I can find no marriage in the whole of the GRO index for Edward Green & Ann Curtis, but there is an entry in the March quarter of 1863 in Sleaford for Edward Green and Ann Carter. I am therefore wondering if Ann's maiden surname could possibly have been incorrectly registered.
If anyone has access to the parish records for this area I would be most grateful if they could search for this marriage.
Many thanks.
Geoff

The Edward Green / Ann Carter marriage does say Carter. Unfortunately she did not sign it just x. Father Thomas Carter a labourer. Ellen Green was a witness also Masolin Pearson.

Does the 1863 marriage show Edward's father also as Thomas

Hi Rosie
Does the 1863 marriage show Edward's father also as Thomas
Sorry Carole, I missed your question.
Yes Edwards father is Thomas Green occ Labourer.
Hopefully Carliol will respond to our replies :)

With her birthplace of Holdingham, Ann Green does look likely to be the Ann Curtis b abt 1837 Holdingham who is in service in the area in 1851 and 1861.
-
There's also an Ellen Curtis (Ann's possible sister?) b abt 1844 Holdingham in service in 1861.
Actually born 1845 and registered Dec qtr 1845 Sleaford - Ellen Curtis mmn Green.
In 1851 she is with father Thomas Curtis in Holdingham - no sign of his wife. HO107/2100/275/6.

Same family in 1841:

Thos Cortes 30 Ag lab
Mary do 30
Mary do 11
Jane do 6
Ann do 4
Thos do 2
John do 10mo

Many thanks to you all for your welcome information. On the GRO online index there are no recorded births in the name of Green with MMN of Carter in Sleaford or the surrounding area in the 1860's/1870's. Ann's given surname of Carter on the 1863 marriage certificate can be linked to the MMN of 'Cart' on two of the children's births - William Edward & Ann Keziah.
All of your research does strongly suggest that the 1863 marriage was that of Edward Green and Ann Curtis, not Carter. A further thought is that the marriage banns might have her surname recorded correctly.
Rosie, could you kindly advise the name of the church where they were married, and the date, from the marriage certificate.
Geoff
