My gran was a gypsy and I have pictures of her growing up with the traditional caravans. She was related to the Fletchers from the Birmingham area and the Gaskins from Sudbury. Alfred Gaskin was enlisted into the labour corps in byker and he was from Sudbury. He was killed in 1917 outside totes and I visit his grave every year.
-
She married into the Hunt family who were from Lancashire and possibly originally from Ireland and settled in Gateshead.
-
Have you got any names? What exactly do you want to find out?
-
Hi, I’m looking to establish if the Gaskin family that appear to have links in Tiptree / Kelvedon are my relatives who were based around Sudbury and some of whom ended up in the north east. Are there any links known to Alfred (Alfie) Gaskin to the Tiptree / Kelvedon mentioned Gaskins ?
As for names, my great grandmother is Eliza Gaskin and she married Bertie Fletcher. Does anyone have any knowledge ?

You need to supply at least one definitive, verifiable date for us to get anywhere...
-
If I have the correct record, when Eliza married Bertie in 1909 her name was registered as Gascoin.
What was was the relationship between Eliza and Alfred? I see the CWGC record for Alfred is minimal.
You say " she married into the Hunt family". Explain, please.
To help you, we need more specific details of names, dates/ages, relationships and locations.

Just adding this, if marriage is not that posted above:
Marriages December quarter 1901
Priscilla Cammish Burton 6b 741
Samuel Herbert Fletcher Burton 6b 741
Ann Elizabeth Gaskin Burton 6b 741
William Holmes Burton 6b 741

Hi everyone who took the time to reply. The war record is correct and that is my relative.
Bertie Fletcher and Eliza Gaskin are my great grandparents and my gran, their daughter was lenorah and she married into the Hunt family in Gateshead.
As far as I know the Fletchers were from the Birmingham area.
Alfie Gaskin was enlisted into the army in ww1 at Byker show ground in 1917.

This is Alfie Gaskin’s picture, memorial document.

Just putting the birth:
Births March quarter 1918
Lenorah Fletcher mmn Gaskin
Newcastle T 10b 271
and marriage, with different spelling:
Marriages September quarter 1943
Leonora Fletcher Hunt Gateshead 10a 1849
Joseph Hunt Fletcher Gateshead 10a 1849
-
This is the marriage that Brentor Boy found:
Marriages September quarter 1909
Bertie Fletcher Aston 6d 545
Eliza Gascoin Aston 6d 545
get the certificate for confirmation of their Father's names, and find them in 1939(with Leonora) for exact dates of birth.
-
The family is in 7 or 8 family trees on Ancestry, some with many pictures - are you aware of them?
One of them is yours?

If you know he enlisted at Byker Show Ground from his service records, then you know that he was 28, his wife was Leonora Aymer, and they married in Glasgow.
This one?
Alfred Gaskin Leonora Hamar 1908 644/2 341 Camlachie
-
The children might be
15/11/09 Mathew
09/08/11 Alfred ?
not even sure if a name and date is here or attached to 'Lovaine'
23/05/1X 'Lovaine'
Born in Camlachie with surname Gaskin
Alfred Gaskie 1911
Juanita Hamar Gaskin 1915
This looks like Matthew
Matthew Gaskin mmn Hamer December quarter 1909 in Ashton-under-Lyne

Leonora looks to have had an address as 50 Bangor Road, Leith, Alfred's parents are Walter and Alice of the Showground, and he had a brother Monte(??). Leonora is living at the Showgrounds when he dies.
-
This looks like Alfred's family from 1901 census
Living in Headingley cum Burley in a caravan
Walter Gascon 44 Essex Hampstead?
Alice Gascon 42 Beccles, Suffolk
Montagu Gascon 20 Ely
Mark Gascon 17 Mildenhall
Eliza Gascon 15 Norfolk
Alfred Gascon 11 Wells, Norfolk
Matilda Gascon 8 Norfolk
Ada Gascon 7 Norfolk
Louisa Gascon 5 Halifax
Added:
and 1891 (did not age between 1891 and 1901)
Living in a caravan in Norwich, and all born Essex
Walter Gaskin 45
Alice Gaskin 42
Salina Gaskin 16
Walter Gaskin 14
Monty Gaskin 12
Mark Gaskin 8
Eliza Gaskin 6
Alfred Gaskin 3
Matilda Gaskin 3/12

Walter and Alice might be in Kincardine in 1911 census (ages 55 and 53).
Possible marriage
Marriages June quarter 1872
Walter Gaskin Bury St. E. 4a 738
Alice Lamb Bury St. E. 4a 738
but those ages in 1911 and 1901 would be wrong, 1891 looks a more accurate situation.
Marriage would fit with this birth
Walter Gaskin mmn Lamb
GRO Reference: 1875 D Quarter in GUILTCROSS Volume 04B Page 236
However, I can see some other Gaskin/Lamb births around the country, but not to agree with censuses.
-
Agnes Eliza Gaskyn, possibly Eliza in 1891 census, born 24 December 1885, baptised 4th April 1886, parents Walter and Alice, living in a caravan, occupation as Gypsy. Colkirk, Norfolk.
-
I think Agnes Eliza Gaskyn is also your great grandmother.
From her (Eliza's) marriage to Bert Fletcher, her father is Walter Gaskin.
Are we trying to link to Tiptree/Kelvedon Gaskins, and who are they anyway?
-
Hello! I'm new to all this. Could you please tell me how Alfred Gaskin in the first group relates to Walter Gaskin in the second?
Thank you!

You are looking at what appears to be the same family unit in 2 different census years.
Relationship looks like parent and child.

I everyone, apologies as I have only jut been able to pick this back up again. I've been reading the enclosed with great interest.
Interestingly, I was contacted through Ancestry by a Donna Price from Cheshire who has told me she is a Romany and matches my DNA. Her mother's side are from Norfolk originally. Although she knows the Gaskins as a family name, she doesn't know how we are both connected to one another. She is of the view we are connected through her mother's side of the family (Greys). Be interested to learn is the Greys are connected to the Gaskins in some way.

I don't think it's through Gaskin or Gray. It'll be on Bertie's side via Fletcher or possibly Hoadley or even both. They are connected to Donna's Tapsell tree.
