Hello,
Can anyone guide me on the best way to find information on Welsh Methodist ministers from the late 1700s / early 1800s?
I've tried all sorts of things but to no avail.
I'm specifically looking for anything on David Jones who was born in the 1770s (I think) in Anglesey and later in life lived in Dwyran but had also been in Ty Newydd and perhaps LLanidan or LLanbeblig. He is a direct ancestor.
I'm on the other side of the world in New Zealand so visiting anywhere to research is not an option.
Any assistance much appreciated.

Just to start - how did you find the information on David Jones being a Methodist minister?
What sort of things have you tried to no avail?
Also, are you aware that there are responses to your Gledhill posting?

Hi,
A handwritten note in some family papers left by a now deceased relative indicated that David Jones had been a minister in Dwyran, as well as being a small scale merchant.
At this stage I've attempted to find info via Methodist Church websites, archives, newspapers, historical articles and the like without success.
Re the Gledhill reference - I know I had one reply - are there others? I do have a wee bit of difficulty in knowing how to navigate around this site.
Thanks.

Dwyran Calvinistic Methodist Chapel appears to possibly be still in existence. Have you contacted them? They may well have a list of their ministers. From what I can see online they still have some of their own records and others are at Anglesey Record Office.
Their is a post from 2011 on the Anglesey Roots Chat from from 2011 about this chapel. I’m sorry bunt I have no idea how to link it to this post.

When and where did David Jones die? Who, when and where did he marry? On his children’s baptisms what is given as David’s occupation?
-
If the chapel I found is the correct one you are looking for Calvinistic Methodist chapels in the other places. Is that correct?

Hi,
When researching this sort of info., it is useful to look in old books many of which can be found on

Welsh Journals on line http://journals.library.wales
Y cylchgrawn 1 April 1879 ( a Welsh language, monthly, religous periodical serving the Calvinist Methodist denomination).
In an article describing the funeral of the Rev. W. Jones of "Brynceinwen, Dwyran, Mon" in February that year it mentions
"... This is the most numerous funeral procession seen in Dwyran since the burial of the Rev. David Jones, 26 years ago ...".
Most of the responses I've had are in Welsh and I haven't got a lot of time at the moment to go thru' them. Does the above fit with what you know about "your" David Jones?

Possible marriage?
David Jones, bachelor of the Parish of Llangeinwen and Elizabeth Jones, spinster, of this Parish married by Banns the Tenth of September, Eighteen Hundred and Five. Both signed, witnesses Owen and John Jones.
The FindMyPast transcription gives groom's residence as Llangeinwen and the bride's as Llanidan - marriage place Llangwyllog. This doesn't seem to fit??

Thank you all so much for the information you have contributed about David Jones. Amazing. It'll take me a little time to work through everything but I have far more leads than I thought possible when I very hopefully posted my original message.
Smith from England and Jones from Wales is a heady combination to research!!!! :)

1841 Census (ref. HO107 1360 17 6)
David Jones, 60, Farmer
Elizabeth Jones, 50
Elizabeth 20; Catharine 15; Robert 14, Laura 8

Many thanks to those who posted census and marriage references - I believe they all apply to my David Jones based on family info I have. Most appreciated.

Two further sources of information about Rev David Jones of Dwyran
are written in welsh.
Hanes Plwyf Niwbwrch [History of Newborough Parish] by Hugh Owen,
published in 1949, contains a chapter on Capel Ebenezer, a Calvinistic
Methodist Chapel, with a footnote which provides details about the
ancestors of Rev. David Jones. The Newborough methodists first worshipped
at Tyn-rallt the home of his grandfather, John David [baptized 17
January 1725 son of Samuel David and Jane Bonn, at Newborough church]

There is more at:
Hanes Methodistiaeth Môn [History of the Methodist church in Anglesey (1851)]
volume 2 page 506 and the following pages. It adds the detail:
After the death of Sion Dafydd [John David], Ty'n-yr-allt, the
religious cause was moved from there to the well-known place of
Plas-Newborough, the residence of the parents of the Rev. D. Jones,
Dwyran, and stayed at there for about 7 years. After that it moved
again to Owen Jones's house, near the village.

The will of John David 1775 at the National Library of Wales
mentions his three sons John Jones, Owen Jones and William Jones and
one daughter Jane Jones.
NLW B/1775/16 John David; he was buried 21 August 1775.
