I found this photo in my mother's old family album after she died. There are no identifying notes but my 2nd great grandfather was Paul Paulsen who was born in 1819 and died in Trondheim on 25th May 1884. That may be him with the long beard. He had nine children, the oldest having been born in 1843 and 1846, but I'm thinking the photo is more recent than that.
Any help with dating this image and restoring this would be very much appreciated. I realise it's a real challenge.
Thanks

This is 1870's & probably late decade so quite possibly your right.

Hi Richard...I agree with Jim. You might want to amend the title of your post to include a restore, that will bring it to the attention of the restorers.

Had a go but many will do much better

Thank you Japeflakes. That does look like Paul Paulsen with the beard now.

It would certainly help to have a higher resolution scan, but I see the restrictions of the forum.

Thanks very much for your time and expertise Jan and Pat.
Yes. The 500 kb limit on images is restrictive. I do have a larger resolution scan.
We certainly have made some progress on a badly damaged image.

My try. :)

Wow! That's terrific Peter.
Do you use Photoshop? My skills are limited and I only have the old Photoshop CS3.
Thanks very much.

You're welcome, Richard. :) I use Photoshop Elements; I think most people on here use either Elements, Photoshop or GIMP, various versions.
Cheers,

Photoshop is the best software, but it has become costly. GIMP is a great alternative, plus it is free! There is a plethora of tutorials on Youtube, even for very beginners. It's worth a try!

paint.net is also FREE and there are tutorials and loadsa plug-ins for extra effects, however, I also have GIMP which does much more if you can master all the controls ... a long steep learning curve, but do-able due to the lockdown's enforced leisure time ... my neglected garden is now officially a jungle ( due to West of Scotland more than is necessary rain.)
Here's a crude attempt at colouring in, by numbers, cheers, Ian

See if you peer with one eye closed .... it becomes prettier, in the same manner that people look better the drunker you get
