Title: Unidentified Church / Possibly South Wales
Post by: noytd on Tuesday 08 October 19 13:46 BST (UK)
This picture appears in a family photo album. The family were based in the Reynoldston area near Swansea, so for many years I assumed it was Reynoldston Church. However, I appear to have been wrong!

Does anybody know where it might be?

Many kind thanks in advance for any help.

Reynoldston is on the Gower peninsula, and I don't think this church is anywhere on Gower. Firstly, the style is completely wrong; secondly, I don't recognise this church despite knowing Gower well.

agree with you, Annie, very unlikely to be Gower

Just wondering if anyone has got anywhere with this?

If not, I wonder if noytd might be able to provide high resolution scans of some bits, please, just in case they could help with an identification. Things which come to mind:

the man in the trap - in case the clothes suggest a date
some of the wall near the porch - to try to identify material used
ditto for the tower
to the left of the porch - is that a large tomb with railings round it?
some of the memorials in front of the church

Since the roof looks recent, what I'm trying to work out is whether it's a completely new building or a re-roofed old one. I think, but am not certain, that some of the memorials look quite old, in which case it's probably a re-roofing job.

I still don't have much idea where it is, though the stonework might give a clue. I've looked through some pictures of Welsh churches but not seen anything similar, so is there anywhere else the family might have been connected with?

I could be totally off target, but the style looks a bit like Herefordshire to me.

It looks like the church is St Laurence, Seale, Surrey.

Indeed it is - very well done, Trish.  :)

It's gained a clock since our photo was taken, but here's one much nearer the date:
