Title: Herbert Johnson b.abt.1852
Post by: skylark on Monday 07 October 19 14:45 BST (UK)
Herbert says he was born in Sheepsbridge Derbyshire.  He married Sarah Austin 21 Dec 1868 St.John Newbold & Dunster Derbyshire. Does anyone know his whereabouts in 1861 or who his parents were?
I have information that his father was George b.abt.1809 North Wingfield but I can't prove this.

In the 1871 Census he gives his pob as Stonegravels. In the 1861 Census, living at Stonegravels, Newbold, Chesterfield is James Johnson 52, Potters Carter and his wife Elizabeth aged 53. They have 6 sons with them, one being Herbert born 1852

Yes, I was wondering about that.  It would make perfect sense if I hadn't got a George buzzing round my head.  I wonder who the named father was on his marriage cert. I have only been able to see the banns cert. so far and no fathers name was on that.

Transcription of the marriage entry, on FindMyPast, courtesy of FS (England Marriages 1538-1973), says that Herbert is aged 18 and that his father is George.  Sarah is also aged 18 and her father is said to be John Austin.

The marriage entry on FindMyPast comes from familysearch. Looking at the marriage on fs there is a link to a tree which gives Herbert's birth as 1852 Sheepbridge, father George, but there are no sources given to back this up, nor can I find a baptism which fits as yet.

Thank you. So it was familysearch that I got 'George' from.  As we know, that is not always certain.

My advice would be to order the marriage cert.

I have just had sight of the marriage cert. on Ancestry.  Herbert Johnson 18 miner of Sanforths field f.George labourer - Sarah Austin 18 Whittington father John Eng.driver.  21 Dec 1868 at Newbold cum Dunston.  So that puts Herbert's birth at 1850/1?

There are a few trees on ancestry for Herbert, they are having similar problems with names of fathers and step-parents or others.
Was George still alive when Herbert married?  Who were the witnesses?

George was not 'deceased' on the marriage certificate and the witnesses were Jonas Pearson and Martha Bingham.  Jonas, I believe, was born around 1845 and, I believe, he married Martha.  At least I found a Jonas and Martha Pearson on the 1871 census,
