Title: John A Rule
Post by: cire on Saturday 05 October 19 19:45 BST (UK)
A John A Rule married a Mary Deegan in the Catholic church in Sydney in 1854, but I can't find anything about him before that. Does anyone know when he arrived in Australia and where he emigrated from?

What makes you believe he wasn't Australian to start with?

Hi,

What information is actually on the 1854 document?  It is from the Early Church Records,, NSW BDM,  as civil registration commenced 1856.

Was he recorded as a bachelor or widower?
Is his then age noted on it?
Does it give his then home parish or his rank/profession?

Could he have been a soldier,  in the British Army stationed in the Colony?

The actual NSW BDM online index is free to search and it should have more info than 'V' for the refetence number .... Ancestry and other commercial family history websites have combined and mishmashed various indexes and some data seems to have been snaffled off into cyberspace...

The 1854 marriage for John RULE and Mary DEEGAN is recorded in the registers at St Marys Cathedral, Sydney.  It may have been a ceremony at the Cathedral, or it may be a transmitted record for a ceremony conducted elsewhere within NSW.   TheNSW BDM reference at their online index gives it as 1854,  Volume 100, line 466.

I notice that the Freeman’s Journal includes a John RULE as donating to the fund for fencing the fencing at the Catholic Chapel, Kurrajong in 1855.

Is he 'your' chap?  Have you considered contacting https://www.kurrajonghistory.org.au/

Thanks for the replies, I have checked out 2 or 3. I have downloaded the marriage but it doesn't give much more info.  What I found on his death is that his father is also recorded as John., but in the space for his mother it says "died in Sydney" Will look at some of the others during the week.
