Post by: tilly25 on Saturday 05 October 19 11:44 BST (UK)
What was a hose hand in 1892 this lady worked at 10 Kills Yard, Millstone Lane. She lived in the Union Workhouse WSD what does WSD stand for.

Hosiery industry perhaps?  Are there other similar occupations on the same page?

WSD could be the district.

Hi
I think she would have worked finishing off hose that had been knitted on machines. I also think it was probably USD rather than WSD which stands for Urban Sanitary District.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Sheila.

Is there any way of finding a register of people living in the Union Workhouse that has their age or date of birth, I am looking for Mary Carroll who gave birth to a Nora on 13/1/1892. No father listed

She may have just been in the workhouse to give birth then if that is the address on the birth certificate?

Have you found her on the 1891 census?

Here's one in 1891 Nottingham

William Redfern 67 head widower born Derbyshire
Mary Carroll 33 boarder single born Derbyshire

Think her occupation is hosiery something.

Hi
I can tell you that Nottingham Workshouse records are available at Nottinghamshire Archives. My Great Grandmother was in there with her children. She died there. The records show when they were admitted and why and when they are discharged and where to as far as i can remember. Some of the records may show a reputed father if a child is born in the workhouse. Sadly my husband's great grandfather was born in a different workhouse but the records for that one do not exist and we would have loved to have known who his reputed father was. None recorded on certificate and husband had been dead a quite a while.
Good luck

Sheila

Can find her until 1911 census when she may have been in  Croydon as a servant with Rotter family. after that she was in Southwell house giving birth in 1913 to Dorothy Lilian Carroll.

Unfortunately Sheila I don’t live near Nottingham to visit the archives, is there any data available online

Birth certificates do not generally give an address for someones employment.  It should show the place where the child was born and the address that the mother /informant was living.  Where on the form is that address given

It states under 7 signature description and residence of informant as follows-:  M Carroll, mother Union Workhouse Nottingham

Thank you.

I would interpret that certificate as Nora being born in the workhouse and the birth being registered there 3 days later. The address of Kills Yard being the mothers normal place of residence to which she probably returned after the birth and not her place of employment.

I thought it was her place of employment as it states Hose Hand OF ( being the operative word)  10 Kills Yard.
I suppose it’s how you interpret it

You will need to 'trawl' Millstone Lane to find it, that is how I located it in 1891.
