hi,i would like to find mu grandfathers record during the 1914 -18 war he was from Glasgow and has the unusual name joseph winn .joseph walker
-
Welcome to Rootschat!
Just to be clear, is that 3 forenames Joseph Winn Joseph ie JWJ Walker?
Do you know his year/date of birth?
MaxD
-
Max - I think this is Joseph Walker asking about a Joseph Winn.
-
my grandfather joseph winn was born in 1900
-
Are you sure about the birth year? The only Joseph Winn in the Scottish censuses was born circa 1896-7. This tallies with a birth registration in Camlachie in 1897.
-
Sorry Joseph (both of you!), mis-read your post.
While you are at it with the date, do you have any other detail, where in Glasgow for example. There are a number of J Winn showing u but we need more clues, did he survive the war for example?

you are right with the date and camlavhie

You may not be aware that some 60% of Great War service records were lost to bombing in WW2. He does not seem to figure in extant identifiable records which would suggest that his record may well have been among those lost.
There are medal records for a number of Joseph Winns but these have no personal detail to identify the man. There are pension records too but none that can be tied to him as far as I can tell.
Does the family have any medals/photographs or any other clues?

he had 3 medals 2 coin shaped and 1 bronze star I am sure he would have been in a regiment that recruited around Glasgow
-
These are almost certainly the 1914 Star or the 1914/1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, info here:
https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/how-to-research-a-soldier/campaign-medal-records/the-british-campaign-medals-for-the-great-war/
The Star should have his regiment and number on the back, the other two have it impressed around the rim. This info can tell us a bit more - are you able to see the medals?

There are not many Joseph Winns on the 1914-15 Star medal roll. This could be Private Joseph Winn, 399339 Labour Corps, 16498 KOSB.

Shaun, Unfortunately I don't think Joseph Winn 399339 is the right man :-\
WWI Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923 transcript has this man as a resident of Grimsby, born in 1889.
-
Another poss - Joseph H Winn 9980 2 R Scots Fusiliers, 1/7 Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) 292291 (1914 Star plus BW and V)
Awaiting news on the medals though.

can anyone tell me the service record of my grandfather JAMES WALKER 16/6/1884 born in the camlachie district of glasgow
-
Joseph
You have started another thread for James Walker which is fair enough but do you have any answer about the engraving on Joseph Winn's medals?
MaxD
-
sorry I don't have the medals
-
A pity, they would have told us the regiment so I don't think we are going to be able to identify him.
The story with James seems to be similar to that of Joseph, no service record that can be positively identified as his. Again, a number of james Walker medal records, also unidentifiable. Frustrating I know but the odds are always against finding a Great war service record. Do you have any other family clues that might help?

thanks i'm afraid I don't have that info might ask some cousins at christmas

You might like to contact the Mitchell Library to enquire about absent voters lists for Glasgow (assuming that was still their place of residence). These list showed a man's regiment and sometimes service number. Link here: https://www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/ExploreRecords/Pages/Voters-Rolls.aspx
