I am looking for any information on my grandmother born Nancy Shields on 26 May 1920 in Auckland. Her birth mother was Agnes Shields aka Hogan, maiden name Dickinson.
We have vague information on who her father was, but we were told he was a wealthy Auckland businessman.
Nancy was adopted when she was 2 by Fanny Jane Sisam, a widow who had looked after Nancy since birth.
I welcome any info you might have
Thanks Kathy
-
So Agnes was married to a Mr Hogan, but using the name “Shields” - is that right?
Has she been traced before and after Nancy’s birth?
-
Hi, yes Agnes was married to William James Hogan, who also used the name Shields though they did separate, it's not clear when as they never divorced.
-
Looking at your whereabouts I take it this is Auckland NZ rather than Auckland, Co. Durham? If so you may want to get the thread moved to the NZ board.
-
Sorry yes Auckland NZ...I will try figure out how to do that, thanks

You can use the “report to moderator” link at the lower right hand side of your post to request a move to another board. :)

Was there a formal adoption..........documents etc.

Hi there,
Thank you for your info.
Nancy was adopted when she was 2,
Here is her birth certificate.
I have seen the adoption papers, but I wasn't allowed copies at that time, I had to read it at the courthouse.

Hello.
Have made PM contact with Kathy7 offering to look up and photograph, any Auckland Archives held files that are available for viewing, and that she thinks worthy of her attention. Hope to be back there before the end of the month.
Alan.

Hello Kathy7
Do you know, or can guess at the identity of GillyR who submitted the headstone photo. Could be a closely related LIVING family member.
Privately approaching that person may assist with your enquiries.

Sorry I have no idea who GillyR might be
I could message them though
Thanks

Hello again Kathy.
Re NZN Archives file R23879094 - Coroner's Unnecesssary Case files / Agnes SHIELDS.
I have never looked up one of these files, so am uncertain as to how much detail the submission to the Coroner would contain. I assume the Police considered the cause of death was straight forward, and the submission just a formality. Such submissions then being filed as "unnecessary case files" by the Coroner's Office.
As the file is held at Wellington I'm not in a position to add it to the two that I will eventually investigate, and photograph, in the Auckland branch. Moderator 'spades' will probably be in a position to advise you, re Wellington held files.

Alan I think GillyR just takes photos of headstones in that cemetery,if you look at her profile.

Hi Kathy,
Regarding the file mentioned by Fresh Fields above;
Archives file R23879094 - Coroner's Unnecesssary Case files / Agnes SHIELDS.
https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=23879094
I can get this if you want. I imagine it will only provide cause of death without further information, but I would recommend you get it just in case there's more.

Regarding Alan's suggestion above re the Archives New Zealand file - Coroner's Unnecesssary Case files / Agnes SHIELDS;
I have sighted this file today which consists only of a single sheet of paper titled Coroner's Order for Burial, which authorizes the burial of the body of 'Agnes (or Agnes Jean) SHIELDS of 12 Morton Street, Freeman's Bay Auckland'. Dated Auckland 24 April 1952.
It also stated that the Coroner did not consider an inquest necessary.
Addendum: across the top of the document is written the cause of death: 'Certificate from Dr Freeman: - Cerebral haemorrhage (and) Essential hypertension.'
Thanks Alan, for the suggestion. ;)

Many thanks to you all. Spades, Alan and Janette

Thanks 'spades' for looking that up. With a case file name like that, I assumed that would be the case, but was unsure how much supporting info the Police were obliged to supply in such cases.
Alan.
PS The business of farming, and farm cover, got in the way of me visiting the Auckland Archive today, but hopefully I will be back in the near future, and will look up the two Auckland held files for Kathy.

Hi Alan,
I wasn't sure what I would find, so it's handy to know that those files contain.
Thanks again,
Spades
-
Hi again.
In some unrelated searching tonight I came across the listings for the UNNECESSARY CASE FILES 1958 ~ 1962. Nine files in total, and by counting the semi-colons in each file, of listed names, there appears to be about 100 named people in 8 files, and 70 in the 9th. So not to be ignored, considering the inmformation spades found on the one he looked up.

Hi Kathy.
22 Devenport & Sisam file photos, taken at the Auckland Archives on October 29th are on their way. Not the quality of "spades" Wellington handy work [my hand shakes] but all should be readable. Come back if you require replacements.
Hope to be back again soon.
Alan.
