I am trying to find a marriage of a John Sharples born 1804 to William and Esther Sharples of Tong.
He is married to Ann born 1794 and ten years older than her husband and have children James born 1827 and baptised at Saint Peter, Bolton Le Moors and Esther born 1835 and baptised at the same church. What stumps me is the only marriage I can find is one of John Sharples at Saint Peter, Bolton Le Moors to an Ann Crompton both listed as widowed. It is possible for Ann to be widowed because of her age but John is only 21 when he marries her and it is less likely though not impossible is it? I am certain that this is the right John Sharples in my family but I am very unsure this is the right marriage. I am unable to find a marriage and a death of a first wife before 1825. The year range is narrow and I have searched endlessly to find one to match. On top of this Ann says she is widowed and I have no idea of her maiden name or a death of her first husband let alone his name. So can anyone help me please to sort this out?
Thank you.

Hello
Looking at the children's baptisms the couple are of Ainsworth and he is a weaver
Also a son William 14.2.1830 at Bolton le Moor
There is a marriage at Ainsworth 9.4.1822
John Sharples crofter and Ann Brothurt widow
with consent of parents
wit William Livsey and Abraham Hardman
Also 29.7.1822 at Bolton
John Sharples bach and Elizabeth Lairde bach and spins wit John and Richard Magnull
Then the Compton marriage in 1825 with witnesses Richard Magnull and Richard Sharples.
Are there any Richard Sharples in the family?
Thomas Crompton buried 2.1.1824 Bolton age 46 years of Great Bolton.
There is a Thomas and Ann Crompton weaver baptising their children in the parish.

Thank you for the replies. John Sharples was the son of a Weaver and needing the consent of parents in 1822 means he must have been a minor and needed permission to marry. So that is very promising.
The marriage is 1825 to Ann Crompton is also very interesting because you have managed to find a possible death for her husband. Richard Sharples is the Uncle of John Sharples of that I am definite and have evidence of this who is listed as a witness on the marriage in 1825.
In terms of the death of a first wife for John Sharples I have been unable to find one but what you have unearthed gives me new lines to follow so thank you.

All marriages except 1 at Christ Church in 1822 were recorded as "with consent of parents" as were majority of marriages in 1821 and 1823. (I only skimmed through 1821 & 1823 marriages so can't vouch for every one.) The curate omitted to score through the printed words in the marriage register "with consent of parents". Therefore the phrase cannot be assumed an indicator of age.
This topic was discussed on RootsChat recently, which is why I checked other weddings at Ainsworth in 1822.
A brother of my 3xGGF married in 1820, aged 26 to a woman of 23, "with consent of parents", like every other couple in their parish that year, according to the marriage register. Contemporary curates at some other churches also neglected to score out the consent phrase for years.
Btw Anne Brothurt, being a widow, needed permission of nobody to marry, even if she was under 21. She was legally able to make her own decisions.

I think you can exclude the Greenhalgh marriage, given this on 1851 in Bradshaw
John Sharples 67
Ann Sharples 50
John Greenhalgh 21 - stepson
Eliza Greenhalgh 13 - step daughter
Elizabeth Greenhalgh 5 - step daughter
Added: although indexed as above by Ancestry, the two girls are Staples. John is also listed as Staples, then amended to Greenhalgh, with "step" added to relationship. The girls still have the dittos underneath, but to mean Staples, as they are listed as daughters (and baptisms can be found as Staples)

Further offspring of your John & Ann(e) - the weaver of Ainsworth
William Sharples
Baptism Date: 14 Feb 1830
Interestingly there's also a Richard, son of John, weaver of Great Bolton, and Ann, baptised in 1820

Thank you for all the information. It was interesting what was said about the marriages and the parents permission. I am pretty certain that this is the right individual and the extra information makes things clearer but there are still gaps which hopefully become clearer as I collate the information together. Thank you all.
