Title: Can anyone help? Michael Dougan Manchester
Post by: colnago on Sunday 15 September 19 17:01 BST (UK)
Hi. I am trying to find my Gt Granddad Michael Dougan on Manchester Census but to no avail prior to 1891. He was born in 1849 or thereabouts. He appears in the 1891 census married to Annie and with several children and living at 27 Dickens Street Manchester.  I know that for several years he had a Hairdressers  in Dale Street Manchester 1879 - 1886 so must have been living in Manchester throughout those years but I can find no trace of him before t 1891. He married in 1886 his wife being Ann McGuinness . The marriage certificate states that his father was also Michael Dougan. Can anyone come up with any suggestions? I have just hit a blank wall.

He was a glass dresser and then a Barber. And then he must have gone upmarket a little. On his death certificate he was shown to be a master Hairdresser. In the Slater Directory for Manchester it shows him as having a shop in Dales Street.

Apologies - you already had the 1891  :-[

But the address given was wrong, the family are at 3 Cohen street, Manchester.

Do you have his marriage to Annie as that should give details of his father.  Sorry I see you have the certificate could you post the details on his father Michael and the witnesses

He was born in Manchester and lived all his life in Manchester. Several addresses. 1891 3 Cohen Street, 1901 Dickens Street, 1907 he died at what was probably his home address of 26 Werneth Street.  I have looked through the names of Dugguns and other names that could have been mistaken for Dougan. Thanks for all the interest so far. The Slater directory for Manchester show he had a Hairdressers shop at 43 Dale Street Manchester from 1879 to 86 though was also living at 8 Butler Street. I have no idea why they moved around so much.

Two questions:
What is the evidence for him being born in Manchester? (Birth? Baptism?)
Does the marriage cert give his father's occupation?

That looks possible Ladyhawk.

I wonder what the father’s occupation was and who were the witnesses at the marriage?

The one I mentioned earlier is possibly at Back Style Street in 1851 2230/ 447/49
Ann Dugan with sons Michael 4yrs and John 8 yrs.
This would make Michael's age wrong though in later records.
Ann marries Michael Daly in 1851.

"No idea why they moved around so much" - possibly that they only rented the accommodation.  Most people at this time did not own the property - they were tenants.

Did someone mention a Gannett Street.  If so, can you give me the information again. This may be the person I am looking for.  I have the marriage certificate and it gives his father's occupation as Joiner. I cannot read the names of the witnesses  but it does look like  W McCarthy and Daisy Harriett.Thank you everyone for your help. HAVE FOUND THE GARNET STREET DETAILS. SO NO NEED TO SEND AGAIN. MANY THANKS. Thought I could link the family in Garnet street up with the family I'm looking for but so far have been unable to. So back to the drawing board.

This is the Garnett Street post again.
Is it significant?
It would be nice to know as the occupation fits.

If you read the other posts, I have mentioned the family in earlier census and mother’s marriage.

It does link somewhere.  Ann McGuinness the wife of Michael Dougan my great grandfather lived at 19 Garnet street. This was given as her address on the marriage certificate in 1886 but so far I cannot link the information to 45 Garnet street. But I am going to look further into it...there is a link somewhere.  Many thanks for your help.
