Title: Newbury, Berkshire - Thomas Attewell
Post by: lechristo on Sunday 15 September 19 11:32 BST (UK)
I'm wondering if anyone can please look up the birth of Thomas Attewell born around 1806 in Newbury, Berkshire. I'm trying to find out who his parents were. He married Maria Hunt in 1827.

His children include Stephen, b. 1829
Henry, b. 1832
Ann, b. 1835
Eliza, b. 1840

Thank you for your help  :)

When did Thomas die as I can't see him in 1841?

So probably not on the 1841 census.

How do you know he was born in Newbury?

Hi @candrjm, @rosie99, @CaroleW,

Thank you so much for your replies. I just realised I don't have have any concrete evidence that he was born in Newbury let alone Berkshire (sorry!). I think he did die before the 1841 census (there's a record for a Thomas Attewell dying in 1839 in Newbury, Berkshire) but I can't find Maria on any census in 1841 either - was it compulsory or might they have somehow missed that family? She remarried John Herbert in 1845 so Maria and the children Stephen, Henry, Ann and Eliza should have been on the 1841 census. I'm trying to find connections for my Uncle's father's family (his father wasn't listed on his birth certificate so I'm going off DNA matches...and I've hit a brick wall at Thomas Attewell in Berkshire). Thank you so much for your help!

I just found the 1841 census. It had been transcribed under Stilwell. Thomas wasn't listed so he must have died prior to 1841. Eliza was 11 months old.

Part qoute
(there's a record for a Thomas Attewell dying in 1839 in Newbury, Berkshire)

This is the death reg for that Thomas:

    ATTEWELL, THOMAS        aged 66
GRO Reference: 1839  J Quarter in NEWBURY  Volume 06  Page 139

making him born c1773

so the previous death registration/burial  in 1841 posted above is more likely to be your Thomas although born c1804.

I can't see Maria in the 1841 census, where was she living ?

Thank you @rosie99 and @candrjm . Sounds like it might be more difficult to find Thomas Attewell's parents than it was to find his wife Maria's! Thanks for your help. :)

If you are still looking for Thomas Attewell and his parents ...

Thomas s/o Thomas ATTIWELL & Fanny
born 18 Oct 1807, baptised 5 Nov 1807 at St Nicolas Newbury

I can't see a marriage for Thomas and Fanny, but a Fanny ATTEYWELL (widow) married John HUNT (bach) on 1 Oct 1810. I can't see a burial for Thomas.

I came across this just doing a speculative search for "Herbert", but it caught my eye because Maria Hunt was a grandaughter of my 7xgreat grandfather Stephen Hunt, and I have a DNA match to the Attewells that I am trying to sort out
