Hiya Jimelad,
Did a quick set of searches on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Which has a better coverage than the IGI and found the following.
Note these are just searches and I don't have any more info as it is a pay per view site.
As a key B = Birth, M = Marriage, D = Death
On the OPR...
Witter B=0 M=0
Whitter B=4 M=1
McWitter B=0 M=0
McWhitter B=1 M=1
Whiter B=1 M=0
On the Statutory Register...
Witter B=1 M=1 D=2
Whitter B=0 M=1 D=4
McWitter B=0 M=0 D=0
McWhitter B=0 M=0 D=0
Whiter B=0 M=2 D=0
Now I suspect if I was quickly running through parish records there is a distinct possibility I would see the name Whitter and maybe see it as White and there are thousands and thousands of them.
Cheers,
Pam
;D
