Title: Baptism Look-up Needed
Post by: Anita Grant Steele on Thursday 05 September 19 08:08 BST (UK)
Hello. I'm having trouble reading the following Baptism. Can someone please clarify the missing and illegible words in italics? Thanks in advance!l

The index reads, 10/14/1735; William Coban; Grant/ James/ Coban  or Cumine and Beatrice Grant

Cabon - To James Coban alias Cumine & Beatrice Grant born ill was Bapnt in t. this 10 April & presented by Duncan Grant in Knock [illegible] the parents being under [illegible]

Would Cumine be the same as Cumming?
The index says the child's name is William, but I'm not seeing that in the actual register? could this be an error, then?

Added: (without seeing the actual image just an educated guess)

Hello & thanks for your replies candrjm and conahey calling.

Yes, it was Cromdale & Inverallan and from the OPRs.

The entry states at the end the child was presented by Duncan Grant because the parents being under ??.
Does anyone have an idea what that was?

Thanks, again.

Any chance you can post a copy of the actual parts of the record for us to see. You aren't allowed to post the whole record due to copyright rules.

Hi,

I think the place is Knockfrank, I found this on a very old map "Knockfranck o Tulnan",

https://maps.nls.uk/pont/view/?id=pont08#zoom=5&lat=1493&lon=92&layers=BT

I think it became Knockfrink / Knock Frink,

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=15&lat=57.3852&lon=-3.4572&layers=102&b=10&point=0,0

The National Library of Scotland have a great selection of maps through time.

If you Google "Woods of Knockfrink" it's still there  :)

I think it says "the parents being under scandal" but  don't know what that means  :-\

Regards,
Daisy

Hello, Daisy, and thank you so much!

I got Knock frank out of the record, but when I tried to look it up, came up empty handed. I thought it perhaps had changed names or perhaps no longer existed.

What a great map!  Thank you!  I notice the map is titled Map of Murray. Is that the same as Moray?  I did look up the Woods - I didn't realize it was so close to Grantown.
Also, a very pretty area.

I agree the parents were "under scandal" - now that you've made it recognizable!  ???   :)

All questions answered. Thank you very much, Daisy!

Hi,

Yes I think Murray and Moray are the same place.

I found this and although it isn't directly about your baptism it may be about the reasons for being "under scandal".

You might be able to find the Kirk Sessions here,

Hi, Daisy,

I just couldn't make out the word, "scandal" in the original text. Between having read many "straight forward" OPRs and my own R.C. upbringing, I don't think it would be a difficult task to come up with qualifying circumstances for a "scandal" list.   :o

Thanks very much for the reference link. It looks very helpful, and I'm sure I will be using it!   :)
