Hi, please see the snippet of my paternal ggggg grandparents' marriage @ Ferintosh in 1761. He seems to have hailed from Newtown & she from Culnagowr. I've found Newtown or Newton, but not Culnagowr (or is it Culnagown) - maybe I'm reading the handwriting wrongly.
Calling placename experts out there for help on this one, please.
Cheers,
Col

Oops, the image doesn't seem to be supported.
Anyway the names are Newtown definitely & Culnagowr or Culnagown.
Cheers,
Col :)

Culgower betwen Brora and Helmsdale on the East Sutherland coast of northern Scotland.
-
Hi & thanks solidrock.
It doesn't look like the same word as per the marriage record but I can't find anything else. It's a long way from Newton. Some 340 kms.
Nothing else closer?
Cheers,
Col :)

Can you try to upload the image again, maybe try to change it to jpeg.

Coulnagour is 2.2 miles North West of Avoch, 7.2 miles from Newton.

"The goat's back!" mebbes?
Skoosh.
-
Hi & thanks blokes. That makes more sense distance wise Malky. I'll go with Coulnagour. Is that goat bit Gaelic again Skoosh?
Cheers,
Col :)

@ Col, the Gaelic again, the Culgower in Sutherland has probably more to do with Levison-Gower, the family name of their infamous evicting duke, than goats! ;D
Skoosh.

Coulnagour is just north west of Culbokie . I live there ;D

Hi & thanks northscot79.

Where did 340 km come from? According to the AA online route planner it's 56.6 miles from Newton of Ferintosh to Culgower, Helmsdale.
Newton of Ferintosh https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NH5653
Old Ferintosh https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NH5758
Coulnagour/Coulnagower https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NH5858
All within a few miles of one another and all in the parish of Urquhart and Logie Wester.
See also https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=758930.0 for what I hope is useful general advice on this sort of query.

Yeah there is only 3/4 miles between Coulnagour and Newton of Ferintosh. They would have attended the same church and more than likely worked with each others families at the Ferintosh Distillery which was supplying 2/3 of all whisky in Scotland due to a loop hole the Forbes family who own Ferintosh exploited outrageously and as a consequence most people in the parish worked there

Hi & thanks for your replies.
I think I may have initialy confused a Newton down Edinburgh way rather than the Ferintosh location, Forfarian. In any case it was too far, the wrong one to fit my ancestors.
Thanks for the additional info northscot79. 34 miles back then is no inconsiderable distance either.
Cheers,
Col :)

I think it is intended to be 3 or 4 miles, not 34 miles.
-
Thanks Forfarian. That makes sense.
Cheers,
Col :)
-
Sorry between 3 and 4 miles! 😀

Hi & that's fine northscot79. When I next visit Scotland I'll take a good look at some of these Fraser haunts. Who knows I might catch up with you over a beer.
Cheers,
Col :)
