Title: Birks family derbyshire
Post by: madpips on Wednesday 28 August 19 18:30 BST (UK)
Hi I am looking for the parents of George Birks baptised on Oct 4th 1814 St Peter's Derbyshire. They are John and Anne, living at Spring Gardens and he is a crate maker, but I cannot find any other info on them. I cannot find any other births for John and Anne so assuming that George was an only child. George was living in Ilkeston Derbyshire on the 1841 census. Thanks to anyone in advance for any info  ???

Yes he did marry Ann Shaw, I have him and Ann on 1841 to 1881 census. There have been some other people who have got parents name John and Anne, but they married and had children 4-6 years after George was born. Have tried to look on the 1841 census to see if I could find any other Birks's, who lived near by, but as of yet not found any. Thought of looking on an 1841 census for Spring garden area which I think is Buxton, as that is where George was baptised as he was living in Ilkeston in 1841.

George wasn't baptised in Buxton -he was baptised in Derby
1851 George lives in Marlpool  Heanor Derbyshire and gives p.o.b. as Ilkeston
there is a Spring Garden terrace in Ilkeston
also Spring Gardens in Chaddesden (very close to Derby)
Spring Gardens in Wessington

Pentridge parish registers there is a death of John Birks 9 Mar 1829 Butterley age 40 (not far from Ripley or Heanor

I did find a marriage record of Marriage 30 July 1832 Alfreton  Ann Birk to George Steeples -unfortunately record does not state widow or spinster

I wonder why george was not baptised in Ilkeston ? Unless parents moved between birth/baptism

there is also a John Birks who was in Court records Derby several years before the birth of George

May all be worth investigating further.?

Hi I think that Ann Birks was single,  in 1851 census:-

George Steeples 40 b Matlock
Ann 36 b Ashover
George 18 b Ashover
William 17 b Alfreton
James 12 b Wakefield
Census ref HO107/2326/508/7

Thanks for the info, done some searching, and think I might have found something but not certain. There is a John Birks born Nov 1777 in Ashover, father is Abraham c1755 and Elizabeth Blanksby, they married in 1771. They had 3 girls Grace 1783, Anne 1790, Mary 1786 and 4 boys Joseph 1788, John 1777, George 1780 and Abraham 1775. Still no other info on John and Ann, but this John having a brother George and (George 1814 ) named his sons with biblical names so thinking could be a connection. Would appreciate some feedback as to weather i'm just clutching at straws, or could be on to something thanks.
