Just in case people may not know , the Paul Merton episode is on Wed 28th Aug BBC 1 at 9pm , probably moved days due to the Bank Holiday !
-
It has been replaced by the last episode of Poldark ;D .
There are two episodes this weekend Sunday and Monday.
-
Poldark!!! Never watched it. One of the books was quite enough for me.... but then I don't like historical romantic fiction. Thanks, think the Radio Times has got it right.

Absolutely LOVE Ross Poldark,in fact I've loved it since the beginning 43 years ago.
So much so that I named my son Ross ;D
So very sad that tomorrow's is the last episode ever :'(

*Does he look like Aidan Turner? ;D
(I love this (new) series - having not seen the old series nor read the books, am excited to see this double episode to see what happens. Sad it will be the last!)
To return to the topic ... I always follow the WDYTYA threads. Living in Australia, I haven't seen any of this new series yet but am interested to see what I am in for when I eventually see them. :)
-
LOVE Poldark - and Aidan Turner of course! Thankfully I can (surreptitiously) access BBC iPlayer to see the series. Otherwise I would have to wait until October to see it here in Canada.
I also saw the original Poldark back in the '70's (?) but never read any of the books.
Also looking forward to catching the next WDYTYA on Wednesday. Thanks for the heads up.

I first fell for Aiden Turner when he was in a BBC series called Being Human. He played a vampire; Russell Tovey was a werewolf and there was also a ghost - they all lived together. I know - it sounds dreadful but it was actually extremely good, if rather gory.
If you Aiden fans haven't already discovered this, take a look. I think you'll enjoy it.

Looks interesting Jillruss. :)
(the blouse/hair combination in Poldark is what appeals to me. ;))
-
Looking forward to seeing Paul Merton on WDYTYA, but fed up with the constant moving of programmmes on Bank Holidays.
I read the books years ago and saw the series starring Robin Ellis as Ross, but there is also a film with John Bowe as Ross and Mel Martin as Demelza.

BBC has also made space for the 2 episodes of the new series of "Peaky Blinders", immediately after "Poldark" on Sunday and Monday. Too much of a good thing; I can only take so much drama in one sitting.
Just as well I bought a "Radio Times".

Um. Those two pale into insignificance after seeing Aiden Turner in the role. ;)
Looking forward to Peaky Blinders too, though it has been so long since the last series I have forgotten what happened.

I enjoyed seeing the Paul Merton episode and his down to earth approach, taking his findings philosophically and all in his stride.
This is one of the more enjoyable episodes in WDYTYA series 16 to date and I think that's probably down to Paul Merton's personality as much, if not more so, than his ancestry.

This was interesting because my family were in Dublin until 1916.
Paul Merton was calm and appreciative.
Best episode this series.
Kooky

A good programme and an interesting reconstruction of his Irish grandfather's life.
The assault with a banjo was fun too.
-
I agree with Kooky !! Thoroughly enjoyed this one.
-
I also liked the episode. Nice mention of Hemsby as I live not far from Hemsby in Norfolk. He may even have stayed at Pontins. ;D
I liked it when he considered getting a headstone for his grandfather.
I think his grans Kennedy line was only about 10 miles or so from where JFK's Kennedy family lived, but as they said, it is a common name.

I enjoyed this episode - but on the whole I've liked most of them in various ways, this time - except the "Whitehall" one, and the rather odd young woman who had not foreseen possibility of Slave master ancestors - sorry, her name's gone completely. Not sure I'll enjoy the Sharon Osborne one, but I'll give it a chance!
It doesn't make any difference to me if the research takes them to places my ancestry lurked in, it's an entertainment programme, after all. If the "story" is good - it entertains! And that one did.
-
Yes I enjoyed this one very much. I thought he was genuinely interested without going 'over the top '. It was quite moving when he said he would like to erect a headstone in memory of his grandfather

Loved this episode - really enjoyable viewing :)
Paul Merton's ancestors' stories were a pleasure to listen to. He, himself, seemed appreciative and interested in all that was uncovered.
My favourite episode of the series so far.
Looby :)
-
I agree with Looby a really enjoyable episode. There were no over the top dramatics as he followed his history.

I've enjoyed all the WDYTYA episodes. But I'd be really pleased if they did Aidan Turner's next... :P :P :P
-
Yes, an enjoyable episode. I have ancestors who were in nearby Wexford and involved in the Irish War of Indpendence during that period. I have sight of testimonies naming them/by them, given in the 1930's, similar to that which showed Paul's Grandfather was 'RIP' at the time of a testimony given in the 30's.
However, our excitement came when our daughter in London texted to say that she had seen her flat in the filming, when Paul was in a taxi after leaving his sister's house! Celebrities at last ;D

I agree, for me this was one of the most enjoyable episodes. The stories told within the family were tragic enough and so often they are not quite as people thought....
I felt very sorry for his mother and her sister to have lost their mother, father and baby brother within such a short time of each other.
I thought Paul handled it all with great dignity and the fact that he wanted to have a headstone for his grandfather very touching and exactly what I would want too...
As to Poldark and Peake Blinders two excellent series... I've still to catch up with the final episode of the former.
Wonder what Sharon Osborne will be like......
Caroline
-
....That's what I'm wondering, Caroline! Doubt it'll be straightforward, hope there's not a lot of screeching!
-
It was a bit disconcerting to see Paul shuffling along in an overcoat, scarf and flat cap though - he looked like an old man, and reminded me that we're all getting old!
-
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode for all the reasons given. He came over as a really nice person who was interested and did not go OTT.
Ross Poledark AHHHHHHHHHHHH Sunday evenings will not be the same without him - must get a life. ;D ;D
Peaky Blinders - Wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of any of them especially the women.

I really liked this one. I agree with others in regards to his reactions not being OTT. Always nice to see someone who isn't overly dramatic.
Just had a look at the blurb for Sharon's and it states; Sharon uncovers the difficult circumstances of her mother’s and grandmother’s lives.
This is starting to sound like more of a biography rather than a family history episode.
