Title: The marriage of Peter Connor and Elizabeth Nichols
Post by: Muffin41 on Tuesday 20 August 19 14:37 BST (UK)
Looking for the births and the marriage of Peter Connor and Elizabeth Nichols; births ca 1795 and marriage ca 1818, Peter was also known as Peter Cornelius when he was born in Kerry, Ireland. :-\

Elizabeth Nichols was born in Wiltshire; she died 16 Apr 1851 in Trowbridge.

The 1851 to 1871 censuses has their family residence as Conigree, Trowbridge, Wiltshire when Peter Connor died 19 May 1871. The 1861 census has his birthplace as Rome Italy? :-\

Good of her not to die before the 1851 census was taken, that names her as Edith age 58 bn Trowbridge   ;D . She is Elizabeth in 1841.

I am going to Foreign parts in a couple of weeks - Wiltshire  ;D .   No family history research though maybe I will be allowed a quick graveyard trip in Melksham or Lacock  ;D

I can't see a baptism or marriage for Elizabeth at the moment.  Marriage is before 1823 as infant child buried in Trowbridge then

I wonder about this one though in Hampshire

The Elizabeth on the 1851 census is Peter’s second wife Elizabeth Jones who died in 1858. Elizabeth Nicholas died 6 months earlier than this second marriage. Second Marriage Certificate gives Peter’s father’s name as William Cornelius and I think it says his profession is Out of Doors man so probably military. (Peter was using the Cornelius surname on and off between 1851/61) I can’t find a baptism for Elizabeth Nicolas in Trowbridge so I don’t think the family came from here originally, the growth of the woollen mill industry attracted people to the area so a marriage in Gosport is possible. I thought the 1861 census read as Lucca, Italy and there was a naval battle in the 1790’s in that area of Italy that had British sailors put their ships in for repair.

Thank you for the information redpaws, I had no idea that it was Peter's second marriage.

Wishing you a Happy New Year in 2020.

When was that second marriage (registered September quarter 1851?)

The 1851 census was on 30th March, so which Elizabeth/Edith was the one showing?
