Hi I am researching my Gr Gr Grandmother Catherine Coghlan who came to Tasmania as a convict in 1845 aged 39.
She was widowed and had 1 Child.
She said she was from Skibbereen and her mother was Honora, brother Timothy sisters Ellen and Margaret.
Margaret at the Skibbereen History centre pointed me in the direction of a possible marriage of
Patrick Coughlan and Catherine Hegarty
I have searched through a lot of BDM's and have found names of above that could be linked ,but no confirmation.
Margaret also showed a listing of an orphan sent to Australia, Mary Coghlan in 1850, and a baptism of a Mary 01/01/1830 parents Patrick Coughlan and Kate Hegarty.
Sponsors James Carty and Nancy Hegarty.
As all of the above occurred before 1864 no records much available.
However I was hoping that some may recognise the names and be able to suggest ideas and connections .
Regards
Cate

Have you looked at the parish registers (if they were R.C.)?

Thank you for the replies.
I have looked at the mentioned registers
Have found
possible birth of daughter Margaret 1 march 1828 Aughadown
F.Pat
M.Cath Hegarty
Spnsrs John McCarty and Mary Coughlan.
the above baptism of Mary 2nd April 1830
Then another child Jerry Coughlan b.12 Oct 1832
F.Pk
M.Kitty Hegarty
Spn Mich Coughlan ,Peggy Hayes
Also a possible Marriage 15/02/1827 Aughadown.
The thing is she says she is a widow with one child on her Convict Indent .
Does that mean Jerry and Margaret died in the famine.
I guess what I need to know is, is this my Catherine Coughlan ? was her maiden name Hegarty ?
The only way I can link her to that maiden name is that she listed Honora as her mother ,Timothy as her brother and sisters Ellen and Margaret.
So are they all Hegartys
I was hoping that someone may be able to help me with a link to those other family names.
Cheers

My gr gr gr grandmother was a famine orphan from Skibbereen.
I have a 1839 baptism that I THINK are her brothers. The male sponsor is a John HEGARTY. I don’t know anymore than that about him.
Bitzar.

Can you consider my question please -
I can see Co. Cork....but I am not seeing Skibbereen. Where do you see this?
What happened to Catherine COUGHLAN after arrival 1848 .....marriage and death details please. Did Catherine have children in Australia?

Hi Wivenhoe ,I did try to reply last week, but somehow it was sent to admin.
I am new to RootsChat and just learning to negotiate the site, sorry.
I also tried to attached the link that I have, but failed that too.
Any way if you look on the Libraries Tasmania,Names Index and type in Catherine Coughlan .
Look at the Convict Indent 15-1-4 image 240 but in particular 241.
It mentions Catherine was tried at Skibb Sess by Mr J Moore Esq in May 1847.
In Tasmania she was sent to work on the North West Coast with Mr Thomas at Burgess ,Tas
She met Charles King (Bardaster ship) also a convict and married.
They had a son Thomas born Oct 1851.
Charles and Catherine purchased their own property at Harford, Tas.
Catherine died as a result of being burned in Jan 1864.
Whilst clearing the scrub and burning off, Her dress caught alight ,she ran to a creek where she was found later that day.
She died about 3 days later.Poor soul.
Son Thomas continued on the farm, married and had children .His son Charles was my Grandfather.

You likely pressed the 'report to moderator' button rather than 'reply' but you got back to the thread eventually :)
I read the above quote as she was tried at Skibbereen Sessions but that doesn't mean she came from there. Where does "She said she was from Skibbereen" actually come from?

From the CON31 record for Charles KING, "Bardaster" 1835, Charles is single.
Many years later, and Charles KING is marrying Catherine COUGHLAN, a woman at the end of her childbearing years. Is this a first marriage for Charles?
They have a son, 1851.......and this boy is named ......Thomas.
You might expect that Charles would give his own name to this son.
I would look for an earlier (unregistered) birth to this couple, and possibly found as a baptism record.
Accounting for all children born to Catherine in Tasmania holds the possibility of finding a record where Catherine's family name is recorded. If Catherine had registered the 1851 birth you might have seen her family name. Unfortunately, husband Charles is the informant.
Further to the purpose of finding any other child born to Catherine, can you identify the marriage and children born to Thomas KING please.
Grangegorman Prison, Dublin (Findmypast)
COUGHLAN Catherine, 38, received 25 Nov 1847
Children.....Ellen COUGHLAN....age......years...11....months...........
Ellen would be with mother Catherine in prison. Between Nov 1847, and ship departure, daughter Ellen has....what?.....stayed in Ireland.......died??......

Thanks everyone for your tips,I have to take a couple of days to check it all out .
Wivenhoe the one from the Grangegorman prison is something I havent seen before and should be a good lead .
As far as finding a maiden name on any other marriage or birth ,I have had no luck.
Catherine only named as Catherine Coughlan.
I have not found any other birth's for Charles and Catherine
I have marriage cert for Charles and Catherine.02/10/1851
Birth cert of Thomas 05/10/1851 yes 3 days after marriage .Thomas's marriage and all his children's birth cert's.
In regards to my initial comment "She said she was from Skibbereen" that was a mistake by me sorry.
Margaret from the Skibbereen History Centre drew a map for me and indicated that
because of distance it was most likely that Catherine would have come from the surrounding Townlands of Aughadown ,Skull or Drimoleague.
-
I was under the impression that if you lived on the edge of Skibbereen then it could be said that you were of Aughadown?!?!?!
Bitzar.

Thanks everyone,I'm still researching.
Wivenhoe your find at Grangegorman Prison is a really good lead thank you.
As I am not subscribed to Find My Past ,I went to the local Library which is and allowed me to look for free.
However even though I found the transcript of Catherine Coughlan being at G'gorman, I could not find the mention of baby Ellen. Is there any way that you could forward me that information or point me in the right direction as to how I can access it please.
I have researched the King Family at Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire and it appears that the eldest son always named his son after his father. So it followed on in the King family as Charles /Thomas /Charles Thomas etc back through the 1700's.
My Grandfather Charles is the son of Thomas born to Charles and Catherine and their only child.
I am currently looking at children born to Catherine & ? Coughlan, named Ellen around 1846.
Hoping this may lead me to Catherine's maiden name.
It may not be Hegarty after all !??

I have the information about daughter Ellen from another Grangegorman source, but saw that Grangegorman records were at FindMyPast so gave that to you.
I will go back to my source to confirm.
-
Thanks Wivenhoe ,That would be wonderfull
