Title: records of soldiers in Ireland 1877
Post by: svb111 on Sunday 11 August 19 18:37 BST (UK)
I am trying to find info on a David Condon who married in Fermoy Ireland in 1877. His father was Patrick Condon.  He gave his occupation as a soldier. In 1881 he was in Manchester and gave his age as 40 and his occupation as a pensioner. I am presuming this is an army pension but could be wrong. I can not find him in any army records and wondered if anyone could suggest where to look . I know what happened to him after 1881 but know nothing prior to his marriage in 1877.

You could check on https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp using Search attached.

Did he name his regiment on the marriage certificate?  What was his address on the marriage certificate?

Worldwide army index 1871, possibly 1861, might throw up some possibilities.
Birth of daughter Mary in Ireland (Clonmel?), circa 1878-9, has that been found?

Sarah, nee Tattan (usually Tatton), was actually a widow when she married David Condon.

Here's her first marriage in 1865 in Fermoy to Michael Brereton, who was also a Soldier

I looked for Michael's Death, with no Location!  "Not found" as Images aren't online.

Didn't look for any children from first Marriage.

Didn't look for any children from second Marriage either.

There is a young, widowed Sarah Brereton, born Ireland, in Wakefield in 1871

The two year son William, born Wakefield, this could be his birth reg
BRERETON, WILLIAM
Mother's Maiden Surname: TATTON
GRO Reference: 1868  D Quarter in WAKEFIELD UNION  Volume 09C  Page 31

Death of a Michael Brereton in Wakefield, March 1870, age 40.
Might be the husband.
Sarah may have later gone back to Ireland, where she met David? If so, there might not be any regimental link between the two men? :-\

Plenty of soldiers in Fermoy to choose from.  Approximately 3000 plus a military hospital.

Ancestry/Fold3 has two references to David Condon b 1841

1) Private David Condon; birthplace Druagh, Clare ; enlistment 1858 1st Battalion 9th Regiment of Infantry - Service Record

2) David Condon; birthplace Truagh, Limerick ;Pension admission 1861

Just noticed that FindmyPast also has the 1858 record as  ‘Fruagh’ , Limerick

Haven't seen the record, but according to the newspapers the 1st Battalion 9th Regiment left England in May 1877 to be stationed in Dublin.

Forgot that the Condons had a 4 year old son Edward in 1881, they said he was born in Wakefield.

There was a David Condon (2899) in the 18th Foot who was discharged to pension in 1874, intending to reside in Fermoy. Per the army file he was a bit older (born circa 1833) than this David Condon purported to be, but then he may have been economical with the truth about his age when it came to censuses as his wife was so much younger. He made a mark on his discharge papers, as did this David Condon on his marriage record.

That’s a possibility, Shaun.

His death in 1906 shows him as 67 yrs.

Some bad news about David Condon of the 18th (sorry)
He died 7.6.1875 (info from WO 23)
Probably the Fermoy death in second quarter 1875, age 43

Oh well back to the search. The 18th was in Fermoy in August 1877 which was what led me to that one.

I think I saw a pension payment record for a David Condon of the 88th - Michael Brereton's regiment. Will try and track that one down.

Have the Church registers been searched for him?

Another possibility?
In 1871 at Raglan Barracks, Devonport (Stoke Damerel)
David Condon, 32, born Ireland, Private 2nd Bn. 18th Regt.
(piece 2129 folio 73 page 24)

According to the 1871 army index his number would be 2252

And there is a pension record for him indexed on ancestry in WO 117
Admitted to pension, 16 Sep 1879, age 40
They have place of birth as Chamel, Tipper

We can see it on TNA website using the image viewer, but images are watermarked
Images 125, 126 (of 166)
Says residence when discharged Manchester

Perhaps that place of birth is going to be Clonmel, Tipperary?

The 18th was in Fermoy in August 1877

But I'm not sure about the 2nd Battalion. They may not have been in Ireland at the time of the marriage? :(
