Title: Y-DNA Project :- Rare Family Names of Britain and Ireland
Post by: degenerate on Sunday 04 August 19 11:23 BST (UK)

I have created a project at FTDNA for those Y-DNA holders with rare British and/or Irish surnames.
The main aim is to motivate those with rare family names to get tested even if they have little chance of comparing results with someone of the same or similar name.  It may transpire of course that they are connected to other surnames.

The current threshold is a frequency of 1000 as reported by The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland (Oxford University Press, 2016).  While this number is quite high, the fact that participation in Y-DNA testing is so low is being taken into account.

If there is a surname project for you already then there is little point in joining.

There may be some form of launch event next year but this all depends on the available time of volunteers.

Are you planning to add some kits? Your group seems to have zero members at present.

I assume Luffman qualifies, under 600 in UK (2001 census) and 2000 world wide including that 600!

Yes. I'm only just getting my act together on this due to demands on time so those that I know about haven't been asked to join yet (although they were aware it was coming).  It'll be a slow, soft start.

OK. I can offer you a Crackett kit if you want, but I will wait until you are up and running.

Feel free to point them to the join link.  Might as well get them on the list. Much appreciated !

I don't know how far you got with this but my son in law's name isn't that common but whether it could be classed as rare is another matter.  However his YDNA is T so he is kind of rare, he is Crew and doesn't even have any YDNA 12 matches.  It's under manual review so who knows someone may come in from 'left of the field'.

Please feel free to join if there is no other suitable Y-DNA surname project.

My husband’s name is uncommon and his  Haplogroup is also rare (C) we already have a surname project which was created out of a named group more than 10 years ago. In 9 years he has only had 5 matches.. all NPEs and 0 in the Uk and only 1 match in the USA that is not an NPE
