Hi,
Could someone kindly look up the intention to marry notice for:
Reihana KAMITI and Mata IKAROA (these are the names in the marriage register)
17 March 1863
married in Kaitaia or surrounding area.
Other names that could be used: Richard KAMITI, Reihana PAORA, Mata HARE MATENGA, Mata MATENGA
Thank you :)

Oh thank you very much - no rush, just when you can ;D

Hi Ahau,
I'm sorry to tell you that I couldn't find an Intention to Marry Notice for this couple under any of the names you provided.
ITM's are indexed up to 1880 and the names don't appear in the card index.
Perhaps Maori weren't asked to complete a ITM at this date, or maybe the couple couldn't pay the required fee.

Much appreciated that you looked for me Spades :)
I have seen that Te Ahu (our local archives) have intentions to marry and as I have a long list of things to look up I am off to there tomorrow. Maybe the intentions to marry for here are held here .... one can only hope :D

Hello Ahau
Different arrangements may have applied to marriages between Maori in the 19th century at least - see, for example the link below under the headings “Continuation of traditional marriages” and “Colonial law and traditional marriage”
