Post by: ZKT on Saturday 27 July 19 17:22 BST (UK)
Im stuck as cant find old parish records for southgate  Tried FindMyPast Ancestry and IGI
Ancestors from Southgate. Got back to Thomas Wadkins m Sarah Rochester 16 Dec 1777 All Saints Edmonton. Found Bpt in Southgate for all their children but struggling to find Birth for Thomas and  hence this parents (found Thomas b 1837 Southgate, his greatgranndson)

(I have  newspaper article from 1907 regarding sudden death of Samuel Wadkins (greatgrandsson of Thomas) in Chase Side The article states '...he came from an old Southgate family dating back several hundred years in he village')

I just cant get back any further. Anyone know where parish records for 1700s Southgate are and can they be viewed online (dont trust transcripts Wadkins and Watkins get muddled up)

In the 1700s Southgate was not a parish but a chapelry of Edmonton, known as the Weld Chapel.

You’ll find the records on Ancestry, in the database London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812. To limit the search results, you can enter Southgate in the Keyword field

Or to read through the register by turning the pages, use the Browse panel on the right, selecting
Borough – Enfield
Parish – Weld Chapel, Southgate
Years – 1695-1812

You would probably be wise to consider entries for both Wadkins and Watkins, since there was little consistency in spelling at this date.
