Title: Dating School Photographs from Romney Marsh, Kent
Post by: scobie79 on Friday 26 July 19 12:42 BST (UK)
Greetings, Rootschatters.
I have here two school photographs to which I am looking to assign some sort of dates.
The first is a standard school group with the name of a photographer, C. Harris of Dover. It is obviously an old photograph, certainly pre-1900, and it has been suggested that this is from 1880-84, but I would prefer some confirmation that this may be true (or otherwise).
The second is, I am afraid, a very poor and blurry photograph of children outside a school, one of those instances where it is what it is, and better, perhaps, to have a poor picture than none at all. However, despite its drawbacks, I am hoping that there is enough definition to the clothing to get some form of date
Thank you for any help on this,
Scobie

Hello again, Rootschatters.
One photograph doesn’t appear to have loaded, so to be sure I have tried it again. Sorry.

Hi Scobie...I would say the first one was Edwardian and the second on to be mid-late 1890s.

Agree with Carol particularly the 2nd. one.

Thank you to both Treetotal and jim1 for your replies. I did think when viewing it that the blurry photograph had an Edwardian "feel" to it, but it is good to have confirmation. As for the group photograph, I am much happier with your dating of early to mid 1890s than the 1880-84 date originally suggested to me.
Again, many thanks.

I would say that the second one is also Edwardian.

The lady on the far right, on the back row of the second photo has the style of sleeves that was typical of 1890s fashion.

Information for C Harris the photographer of the second photo:
"Charles Stevens Harris (1865-1938) of Odo Lodge, 52 Odo Road, Buckland, opened a studio in his home about 1890 running it from there until 1899. Harris then moved the business to 77 London Road until he died on 13 October 1938 at the age of 73".

Again, many thanks to all who have responded to this post with such helpful input. I shall now attach the information gained so that anyone viewing these photos in the future will be aware.
All my best regards,
Scobie
