Title: James Cherry
Post by: bkcherry29 on Tuesday 23 July 19 02:18 BST (UK)
My GG GF was James Cherry, born about 1843-47 in Ballymaglaff, Comber, County Down.  His father was James Cherry and his mother was Mary Rice.  Unfortunately, I can't find a birth certificate for my GG GF, although I've found his first marriage record (to Mary Jane McWhinney/MaWhinney) in Newtownards.  I'd love to find out records of his father James and his mother Mary but I don't know where to look !   I tried Proni but I'm afraid it was not too user friendly for me ! Any advice is appreciated.

Under IRELAND RESOURCES is New PRONI Links which show probably the most common resources there-
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=753389.0

However, PRONI may not be the best place to start your search. First of all, civil registration of births didn't start until 1864 so there will be no birth certificates for James Cherry or either of his parents. What you would need are church records (if they survive) but not all records are online.

Fortunately you have a location to begin with- see here for exact boundaries of Ballymaglaff townland- notice that although it is Comber civil parish it is just slightly south of Dundonald so you may have to search Belfast resources as well as Comber & County Down ones.
https://www.townlands.ie/down/castlereagh-lower/comber-castlereagh-lower-portion/ballymaglaff/

Have a look at these resource threads (Belfast listed under Co, Antrim because most of it is there)

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/antrim-resources-offers/

This is very good for County Down places, families & people- http://www.rosdavies.com/

Also have a look at these 2 threads for finding Irish ancestors and what records are available (although lots more online since they were done)-

Ros Davies has this record- James Rice "of Ballymaglaff ; husband of Mary Rice; father of William b.c. 1831 & Sarah b.c. 1840 & John b. 1841 & James b.c. 1843" which shows 3 siblings to young James.
Young James: "b.c. 1843, son of James Cherry of Ballymaglaff & Mary Rice; married Mary Jane MacWhinney 11 Pct 1867 in Newtownards Registry Office"
Sarah's marriage: "b.c. 1840, daughter of James Cherry of Ballymaglaff & Mary Rice; married Arthur Thomson 1 Feb 1860 in Killyleagh "
Her brother William "b.c. 1831, son of James Cherry of Ballymaglaff & Mary Rice; married Margaret Boyd 23 Jul 1853 in Gilnahirk Presbyterian Church ; father of James b. 1853 & Mary b. 1855 & William b. 1857 ; a widower living in Glasgow, Scotland by 1861"

Garstonite - thank you very much.  Signed up for the premium service but it looks like this member is no longer a member or doesn't have a public tree.  I've sent the service a question about how to access the tree or contact the member but I'm waiting for a reply !  Thanks again however !

Hi
I am connected to the Cherry’s of Raffrey,Ballytrim, Ballyalgin County Down. Have you done a DNA TEST ON ancestry???
I’m also stuck on a few of my ancestors, I have always wondered are the Cherry’s of Clough, Ards, Dromore, Lisburn and Raffrey connected???
I would love to compare trees.
Thanks
Andy

Thanks. I just saw this and had forgotten I posted it. I’ve added some more information to my tree since I last asked based on DNA ! I have taken a DNA test with Ancestry. My tree is the Cherry (Cooper) Tree. You can find it by its designation as bkcherry29 or Brian Cherry. I also did a 23&Me and Family Tree DNA test.  You can also look me up on Gedmatch A582392. If you have a tree I’d love to look at it. My email (*) Moderator Comment: e-mail removed in accordance with RootsChat policy,to avoid spamming and other abuses.
