Can anyone help solve this family mystery?
What's the mystery?
Is it Robert's parents?
Do you have his marriage cert?
It's quite possible Jane was in service & went to Malta with her employer.
Some info about the 1st. Batt.
In 1865 the 1st Battalion was ordered home from India. They had served abroad for the best part of 28 years, apart from 6 months in England in 1854. In Feb 1866 Two ships brought home 29 officers, 450 other ranks, 44 women and 72 children. 381 men were voluntarily discharged and remained behind in India. The ships arrived home in June and 2 years later the battalion was in Ireland. In 1871 they were warned that they would soon serve abroad again but it was not until 18th Jan 1872 that they sailed to Malta. They spent 3 years there, with a strength of 26 officers and 606 other ranks.
In 1875 the 1st Battalion sailed from Malta to India.
Robert was born in Ireland hence his choice of Regt.

If possible I would like more information regarding the Dillon family.
Where in Ireland was Robert Dillon born, exact year of marriage and his death. Did they havw any children?

I couldn't find any children under Consular Births & there are no Dillons born India on the census.
-
OK thanks for looking :)
-
I think I may have found a child.
Ida Mary Dillon b. 4/10/1877 Bareilly Bengal India.
Parents Robert & Jane.
The 1st. Battalion was stationed in Bareilly 1875-79.

Jane died in 1903 aged 51 so we cannot even see on the following census if she gave birth to any children
Well done Jim but I wonder what happened to her, Ida Mary Dillon

Do you think it is possible that Robert took on another woman after 1903, just a thought,

That's her. Can't see her on the 1939 Register as yet.
The Slane Catholic Registers are online but you will need to search it
manually I can't find a Baptism for Robert in the C of I records.
-
If this marriage is the right one she married Henry G V Milward
Louisa Maud
-
Has to be her doesn't it.
I wonder if she married twice.
There's another (as I'm sure you know) in 1943.
Can't see any children for that couple.
Possibly divorced & married again using her maiden name.
Guesswork now.
