I hope this sort of query is OK.
I have a couple of individuals whose birth certificates show their place of birth as “Campsie”, or “Campie”, Kilham, Northumberland. The dates are Sep 1852 (William Scott) and Dec 1854 (Agnes Scott).
I cannot locate this place (presumably an individual property) using various old OS maps I found on a couple of the usual mapping sites, ie “Old OS maps” and “NLS maps”; but on the 1851 Kilham census form, (which covers a fairly small area), there is a “Campsy” included that appears as the final entry for Kilham, after Langham Bridge Toll, but before “Longknowe” which is on a separate page of its own. So possibly somewhere away from the main hamlet of Kilham.
My relevant ancestor’s parents are not living there in 1951 or in later censuses however.
Has anyone heard of a “Campsie” or “Campsy” in this area before?

I see your problem!
It seems likely that this is the map you looked at:

All I can venture is that it is somehow associated with Camp Hill close by.

I lived in the village of Branxton for a while some time ago and the locals there referred to a farm called Encampment as Campie, or Campsie. It is just off the main Wooler - Coldstream road, south of Crookham. The farm is very close to the site of the Scottish encampment before the battle of Flodden.

Thanks, I can see that being a reasonable possibility for the derivation of the name, but wouldn’t that farm be too far away to be reported on a birth certificate as part of Kilham? Wouldn’t it be addressed as part of either Howtel, Milfield or Flodden?

That’s something I did notice, but I didn’t think there were any buildings there.

I found the following.

I don't think that is the correct Campsie, Flatty. Forest Hall is just to the NE of Benton/Gosforth/Newcastle, on the coast side. It's just a bit further out than me! I assume it's the name of a house there.

In 1871 "Encampment" comes under the civil parish of Ford RG10; Piece: 5187; Folio: 66; Page: 11

For those still looking ~ in 1851 as Campy HO107/2422/73/14
As Roger has suggested - Langham Bridge Toll is close to Camp Hill.

I'm thinking if there was a separate property in the Camp Hill area north of Langham Bridge it would probably be more likely to be associated with Downham, which was in the Carham area for census purposes?
A nice little mystery nonetheless, thanks for all efforts so far...
In 1851, would addresses recorded at the register office be based on exactly what the informant said, or what the registrar thought he meant?
I'm not really sure if people would have some sort of accurate address as we know it now, at that time was it based on where the local post office was?
