Title: Am I right or am I wrong? Rebecca Spriggs quandary!
Post by: Big Ted on Saturday 13 July 19 09:45 BST (UK)
My 4th x Grandmother was Rebecca Spriggs.

On the 6th September 1807 she married my 4th x Great Grandfather William Hems at St Boltoph, Aldgate. She was a Spinster and signed her name with 'X'.

She had at least 2 children.

Rebecca born 28th January 1809 baptised 7th August 1809 at Christchurch, Spitalfields.

William born 13th November 1812 baptised 6th June 1813 at Finsbury St Luke.

I can't find her in the 1841 census.

She died and was buried at St Pancras Parish church aged 55 on 15th October 1843 She lived in Britannia Street.

And that was my research into my 4th x Great Grandmother until...

...another researcher contacted me and told me Rebecca was the descendant of the First Baronet Sir William Sanderson and was descended from a Norman Knight who came over with William the Conquerer in 1066 - he had lots of research and there were lots and lots of online trees etc.

And that is where I would have left things - but over the past few years I have been gradually going through each branch of my tree double and triple checking all my and others research - looking for descrepencies and errors - and finding lots - resulting in the wholesale pruning of many branches.

I don't think my Rebecca Spriggs is a descendant of the First Baronet Sir William Sanderson.

I am told that Rebecca Spriggs was born Rebecca Spragg daughter of Thomas Spragg a clock case maker and Maria on 19th February 1786 at Saint Giles, Cripplegate.

However on the 10th September 1802 16 year old Rebecca Spragg was buried at Bunhill Burial Grounds - she was from Cripplegate.

I don't think my Rebecca Sprigg is Rebecca Sragg born 1786 as she died in 1802.

Thoughts appreciated.

A fresh pair of eyes and something new is found! This could indeed be my Rebecca. Many of my ancestors were non conformists and being baptised later in life into the established church to enable them to marry. A new line of research! Many thanks.

Hi
I had a look at the original for that baptism .To me it looks like birth 20.12.1789 not 1783 which fits even better.Addresss York St
Possible other children Mary 13.8.1786 at Christ Church Spitelfields weaver Doplhin Court.
Joseph born 25.11.1788 bapt 20.6.1818 St Leonards shoreditch s of Joseph                          and Susanna Spriggs late George Yard weaver both now deceased (Jo junior is also a weaver)

Joseph Spriggs married Hannah Toy at Shoreditch 7.11.1785.
Joseph is on the London tax records 1778 -1802.

Many thanks for everyones replies.

I think I have found the burials of Joseph and Hannah:-

Joseph 26th May 1818 Gibraltor Row Burial Ground aged 57 Bethnal Green.

Hannah 13th Feb 1814 Gibraltor Row Burial Ground aged 64 from St Leonards Shoreditch

Their surnames are given as Sprigs.
