Title: 17th Lancers
Post by: Winston55 on Friday 05 July 19 05:29 BST (UK)
Can anyone tell me where the 17th Lancers went after 1841?  In 1841 they were at Source Citation
Parish: Govan; ED: Glasgow Cavalry Barracks; Page: 17; Line: 1110; Year: 1841

My ggg grandmother Arabella Purcell was there listed as 17th Lancers but she must have been there with her family as my ggg grandfather William Purcell was also listed there as 17th Lancers.

Thank you

In 1841, after 3 years stay in Ireland, the 17th moved to Scotland.
Coming down to Leeds in 1842 it received a new colonel in the person of Prince George of Cambridge,  Under his command the regiment was employed in aid of the civil power to suppress serious riots in the manufacturing districts in August 1842.
The following year HQ and three troops were stationed in Birmingham.
They then moved to Ireland to maintain order during the abortive insurrection headed by Smith O'Brien. (1848?)
They then escorted QueenVictoria on her first entry to the City of Dublin.
They returned to England in 1850, finally seeing active service in Crimea (1854-1856).

Taken from "A History of the 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge's Own)" on Google books.

Thank you for that.  So they were in Glasgow Scotland in 1841 so does that mean they should show up on the 1851 English Census?

The regiment were in Ireland (Newbridge) at the start of 1851, leaving there mid to late April for Woolwich so were still in Ireland on 30/31 March when the census was taken.  He doesn't show up on the 1851 Army Worldwide index.  Fragments only remain of the 1851 census in Ireland.

There is a discrepancy between the history quoted above and "Stations of the Army" published in newspapers of the time which shows the regiment in Dublin in Jan 1849 (haven't looked earlier)

Sorry I've written my query wrong!

William Carroll born 1821 17th Lancers
Arabella Purcell born 1816 17th Lancers

1841 Cavalry Barracks, Govan, Glasgow, Scotland

I am thinking that they are the children of soldiers or am I totally confused!?

Were the 17th Lancers called anything else?

William Carroll is listed as a private soldier. As I said on one of your other threads , the listing for Arabella Purcell looks like married quarters and my guess would be that she is the wife of either Bernard or William Purcell, both privates in 17th Lancers in Govan at that time. At 25+ she is no child.

What is confusing me is that on my gg grandmother's death certificate - Isabella Kieley nee Carroll her parents are listed as William Carroll and Arabella Purcell.

But wasn't she (Isabella) born circa 1822 ?  So her mother could not be the one in the 1841 census in Glasgow, aged 25+?

Skirting round the wife/children issue, a 586 Sgt William Carroll is in Newbridge Ireland with the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons (the title of the 17th Lancers at the time).  Same number as the 1841 man so same man.

That is from WO 12/1336 at the National Archives, the muster book of the regiment for 1849-1851 transcribed by FindMyPast here:

Died 1 March 1860, now Troop Sergeant Major,  has the Indian Mutiny Medal. https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBM/INDIAN-MUTINY/7743

You are right that doesn't make sense.

I'm now wondering if Arabella Purcell was married to one of these?

Oh wow!  I’m claiming William Carroll 586.  He was my GGG grandfather who married Ann and had four children, three of them remaining in India including my GG grandfather (also William) after they were orphaned...  I was talking about him today with a friend and how he’s still a bit of a mystery and decided to have a bit of a google and this message popped up so now I know a rough year of birth and confirmation that he was from Ireland!  Cheers for that!
