Title: I BOUGHT 3 DNA TESTS-CAN I USE THEM ON 3 FAMILY MEMBERS AND USE USE ON MY TREE?
Post by: GarryLee on Wednesday 03 July 19 07:57 BST (UK)
Hi folks,

I'm looking for some much valued help and advice.

I bought three DNA kits, one which I have just done and will post this morning. However, I want my Mum to use one and my Wife to use the other. When I send my Mum & Wife's in the post and get the results back, Can I store the DNA information on my tree against their names?

I am the only Family Researcher in the family and both my mum and my wife have no intentions in setting up a tree and If i need to create a Mini Tree for both of them just to get the DNA results, then i feel that it I might lose some DNA matches if they come through.

Can someone tell me if the three DNA tests can be hosted on my tree?

Thanks in Advance!

Garry McCallum,

If they are from Ancestry:

Quote
A DNA test can be linked to only one tree at a time. If you want identical trees on two accounts, you can copy a family tree from one account to another. To link a DNA test to a tree that's on a different account, share the DNA test to the account the tree is on (not vice versa).

If you're in the account your DNA results are in and your DNA homepage says +Start tree instead of Link to Tree, you don't have a family tree in the account you're in. To transfer your tree from another account, sign out of the account you're in and sign in to the second account, then follow the steps in Moving Trees Between Accounts.

HI Gadget,

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I'm sorry, but i'm finding it hard to get my head around this. Does this mean that two new trees must be created and then linked to mine?

The question that i asked was if i can host the three DNA tests directly on to my own tree. one for me, one for my mum & one for my wife.

Garry,

If the tests are all linked to your account, you can link them to the same tree.

So, I can put the DNA codes on my tree and attach it to the correct person?

Yes.  I have only one tree which hosts the tests for myself, my husband and my daughter as we are all in this one tree.

When on the DNA page the banner across the top allows me to look at ethnicity/shared matches/thrulines for each of us by means of a drop down choice.

HI Pheno,

So my DNA code is attached to me in my tree. When i send my mums DNA with it's Code is there an option to attach that code on to my mums part of my tree? And will this show on my mums part in my family tree?

Its a bit different now than when I did it some time ago due to the recent data protection changes.

All I can tell you is that your dna results need to be attached to people in trees so you can either have a tree each or one tree with each of you in it as individuals which is probably better in your case if the other two people don't have any genealogy interest.

In theory when all the results are back you need to attach your results to you in your tree, your mum's results to her in your tree and your wife's results to her in your tree.

Someone who has done this recently will correct me but I think that currently each of you has to set up an account individually to actually register the test and get the results but once results are received the other two are each able to nominate you to manage their accounts and to allow you to attach their dna to your tree.  That then would be the end of their involvement as all matches etc would come to you as the manager - provided you have set it up correctly.

The best thing you can do, whilst waiting for the results is to start a tree on your account and make sure that both your wife and mother are shown as individuals in this tree so that you have somewhere to attach the results.  Also of course, then go on to expand your tree with what you know so that you will get more matches.

If you already have an Ancestry tree with your wife and mother in it then it is ready to accept their results when received.

Good luck,  Pheno

Not sure what you mean by your DNA code - I think that is just a means of identifying who has sent what test to Ancestry.  When you receive the results they will be unique to each of you but not a 'code' just a set of results which you then attach to those individuals in trees.

This is what is confusing me too, Pheno.

You will share half of your (ancestral) tree with your mother, so you could split off a section of your tree and create a gedcom for your mother. Your wife will share your descendants.

Might be easier to use the one tree, rather than set up a new one. Easy enough when you get to grips with it.

Garry, If you set up an account for your mother and wife you will need different email addresses for each account. Easy enough with your wife, set it up in her name with another email address, or she could set it up herself.

Your mother needs no involvement at all, other than providing the sample and giving you her activation code. She will have given implied consent for you to manage her results by giving you the code number. If you want to make it more formal you could ask for written consent, but I certainly haven't with my husband - he has no interest at all in DNA of family history.

Margaret - I can see having the same tree for Garry's mother but why have the same tree for his wife, unless he has all her ancestors in his tree already  ???

I have a tree for my husband (well 4 actually!) but they have nothing to do with my DNA, only descendants as I've said.

You suggested a separate tree for his mother, I wondered why!
Perhaps a separate tree for the wife, depends what tree he already has.

Because his mother will only share half his ancestors - so why have them in her tree. It will just confuse others who link with her/DNA and not Garry's father.

Why have just one tree anyway.

Added - I have a direct line tree for Ancestry and a tree for each of my great grandparents off line.

HI Folks,

I don't think that i am explaining myself very well.
I have been researching for over ten years and I only have one tree for me. I have over 3k people in my tree.

Have i possibly made a mistake with buying 3 DNA kits for three individuals who are in my tree, (Me, my wife & my Mum?) I did a DNA test years a go when it first came out and then it was a swab which didn't give any clear evidence of cousins etc.

I was under the impression that my DNA test results would go down my mum & dads linage. I then thought that my mums DNA test would go down her Mum & Dads linage and the same with my wife.

The original question which I asked was "Can I host 3 DNA texts on my tree for three different people" and have the DNA unique to the person who did the test?

Cheers,

The way I see it yes put the three tests linked to your one tree. The results you then get will be

a) Those linked to your wife

b) Those linked to you and your mother (you won't be able to separate these as you get half your genes from your mother

c) The others. these are potentially linked to your father and are the ones I am guessing you are most interested in

All of the above will show you a mini tree on how you are possibly related to your match provided they have a public or private but searchable tree. it will be up to you to verify these to your satisfaction

Matches that do not have trees or no clear connection are harder to deal with but I think you will have enough dealing with a - c above first.

Hope that helps

EDIT: If I have that wrong please would someone correct it. Thank you

You have to set up a free account for each person to activate their test. You then assign manager rights to you which will enable you to connect each test to the relevant person in your tree and do all of the work for them.

"Have i possibly made a mistake with buying 3 DNA kits for three individuals who are in my tree, (Me, my wife & my Mum?)"

No, it can be managed easily.

"I was under the impression that my DNA test results would go down my mum & dads linage. I then thought that my mums DNA test would go down her Mum & Dads linage and the same with my wife."

Correct. Advice is always to test the oldest member of the family, as they will be a generation closer to matches than you are, will pick up matches that you won't have. But you still need to test to pick up matches on your father's line. Your wife will obviously have completely different matches.

"The original question which I asked was "Can I host 3 DNA texts on my tree for three different people" and have the DNA unique to the person who did the test? "

Yes, it can be managed easily.
-------

Whether you separate your tree or keep it as one, you attach the DNA results to an individual person. One person I match with manages several other tests, at least 6 of them match with me, he may or may not manage other tests that don't match with me. Each of the matches is attached to themselves in the same tree, and gets matches individual to themselves. One related match not managed by the original manager also uses the same tree.

It is a bit unfortunate that we cannot establish the connection.

Hope this helps. Things are easier when you actually have the results back, you will be able to see what we are talking about. And you can always come back with any further questions.

It is a fairly straightforward procedure to link and manage them. I have 10 DNA kits linked to a single tree. However, as I mentioned above each kit has to be activated using a separate free account and email address.
