Looking for parents of John Charles DUFORT, born in Paris, France; became a British citizen. All I have for this John Charles DUFORT are the details below. I am hoping there might be additional resources this group may have to find his parents.
I've also checked for Jean Charles DUFORT, no luck.
Thank you,
Robert van Haastert

I have no experience of S African BMD's. Do they ask for a father's name and profession on the marriage certificate?
-
Hi Chrisane,
Thank you for the response. The actual marriage record can be viewed at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GT71-9X7S?i=91&wc=MCM6-2NL%3A44975801%2C44975802%2C50670101%2C50882401&cc=1468076

Unfortunately, John Charles Dufort's parents were not identified. Is it possible the Brookwood cemetery record of his burial would have any information? Newspaper obituary?
I live in Alaska, so not convenient to make a physical visit.

Hi
Yes I saw the transcription of the marriage earlier today but had to leave it until now.
familysearch.org have lots of records for S Africa and have some tutorials which may tell you where you can apply for marriage certificates and what information you can expect to see on them.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/location/1927115?region=South%20Africa
There are quite a few of Du Forts on there from a quick look but I can't see John Charles. Only 11 Nesbitts and none of them Anna Caroline.
Cyndi's list has a lot of S Africa resources listed. Click on categories and follow through.

Just a tiny snippet which doesn’t really advance matters - his exact birthdate, according to his gravestone, was 25 February 1847:

Assuming you’re related, have you considered DNA genealogy in case that helps find connected people?

The above document in HO 334 is just the duplicate of the certificate.
You need to access the application file in HO 144, to see if there are any supplementary papers, as they may have more information on his background. They are not online, but copies can be ordered from the National Archives at this link ...

Hi AVM228,
Thank you for the graveyard detective link. I did not previously have John Charles Dufort's birthdate.
It was a Ancestry.com DNA hit that has me on this search. Third Cousin and I'm trying to figure out whom is the connection.
Appreciate the snippet, it did help me.

Hi Bookbox,
Thank you for the suggestion to find any supplemental papers for the naturalisation.
I did apply/submit for a page check, hopefully, his parent's identities are listed.

Just a quick post to inform that I requested/paid for a Page Check at the National Archives and paid for a digital copy of the background papers dealing with John Charles Dufort's naturalisation.
Unfortunately, only testaments of those knowing and vouching for his character, loyality, and residence were in the file.
Looks like this will be brickwall.

Marriage certificate for his parents on page 83 (use flash player):
http://consultation.archives.hauts-de-seine.net/mdr/index.php/docnumViewer/calculHierarchieDocNum/412029/367506:396213:412162:412164:412029/1080/1920
I know they are his parents because they are mentioned in his foreigner file from Antwerp.

Hi Jos,
THANK YOU! for the link for the marriage certificate. Is the wife's surname BREN or BRET ? I am intrigued by your reference of an Antwerp Foreigner file for John/Jean Charles Dufort which lists his parents.
Do you still have the link or a date for the Antwerp data?
Now I need to get the marriage license translated. I believe I can make out these tidbits
Louis Auguste Albert Dufort, Glasier
Son of Jean Baptiste Chimothie Dufort Colivatier
and
Virginie Regina Berast safemma
Clara Bren
Daughter of Farre Egalite Bren
and
Adelaide Berard
Thank you again! I look forward to reviewing it better once I get home from this business trip.

What's your e-mail? I could send you the foreigner file.
It's Bret I believe.

Hi Jos,
Is the file you are referring to located at familysearch.org at this lnk: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L99C-9LQF?i=509&wc=M6T3-R2H%3A341957301&cc=2023926

Yes, that is the exact file.

Hi Jos,
Thank you very much for providing the hint for the additional research location. Found his parents and grandparents. Familysearch.org also had additional family members.
Thanks again!
Robert
Only wish I could make out the penmanship in the marriage document to put it into a translation program.

Feel free to pm me your e-mail address. I could help you decode and translate some passages. My French is almost acceptable.
