Wondered if anyone had any idea where soldiers in particular from Coldstream Guards and 2nd Life Guards may have been stationed in 1840.
Census for father and son draws a blank with father being in LG and Son coldstream during this period.
Regimental history doesn’t show overseas postings at this time.
Any help greatly appreciated.

?
https://www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/armyunits/britishinfantry/coldstream.htm
includes:
'The time between Waterloo and the Crimean War was called the long peace, lasting 38 years. There were no serious campaigns in that period but in 1839 a Guards Brigade was sent to Canada. This was made up of the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards and the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards. They were required to deal with a revolt by the French element of the population. They were not involved in serious fighting but their stay lasted until 1842. '

Do you mean where in England they were?

Thanks Chempat,
Grateful for that information. Son was indeed in 2nd Battalion of Coldstream Guards.
Figured abroad but couldn’t work out where.
Much appreciated.

You might get further confirmation,at a cost, from the muster rolls and pay lists at The National Archive Kew,or just possibly,Harts Army List 1840(also available on FindMyPast).

At the time of the 1841 census (there was no census in 1840) the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards was based at Portman Barracks; 2nd Batt in Canada. 2nd Life Guards was based at Regents Park. This is from "Stations of the British Army" published in newspapers in June 1841.
There may be more detail in the "Worldwide Army Index" for 1841 which is searchable on FindMyPast and The Genealogist.

Thanks for the information, both names are Thomas Henry Burton.
-
Is the son Private Thomas Henry Burton, born Windsor circa 1822? 2050 Coldstream Guards - his 1861 discharge record shows that he was a musician by profession, and had no overseas service with the army.
The 1841 Worldwide Army Index places him in London.
-
There is a Private Thomas Burton at Portman Street barracks in the 1841 census. Age rounded down to 15.
-
And was the father Thomas Burton, born circa 1799 in Newton upon Ouse, near York? Married at Newton in 1820, wife Maria? 154, 2nd Life Guards. The 1841 index places him at Regent's Park barracks

Spot on. Just can’t find the documents you are looking at. I would add not for a lack of effort!
