Are we talking about the William Mason who is in Great Clifton in 1861 age 46 b Great Clifton?  Provision and Stores? Dealer.
If so his wife Elizabeth is then 47 and born Ulverston
Children at home are
Mary Jane 16
William John 13
Joseph Hudson 10 all b Great Clifton.
Ref RG9 3937 F63 p14
also
George H Mason 19 General Servant b Clifton
with the Raven family at Branthwaite? hall
RG9 3938 F4 p1

I can't help with 1851 but if it is the above it gives someone a better chance of finding them as they should be in Great Clifton, not Workington.
