I am trying to find the origins of my great great grandfather William Dickson. We have some information from the family Bible including his two marriage dates. The first as Dixon was to Janet Cumming 5 Jan 1805 in Greenock Old Parish. He is a limeburner. He is listed in the 1815 Greenock Directory under that occupation. The only known child is Peter Dickson, my great grandfather. Where there any others in 24 years of marriage as we believe Janet died about 1829? William became a seaman and pilot, and I think I have found him in the 1820 Directory on the shipping route to Belfast. There is an Ireland connection later on.
The second as Dickson was to Janet Glen 19 Aug 1830 in Barony, Lanark. Both wives' deaths are mentioned in the Bible but we are unable to read all the information as it has faded and the page sides have been eaten away. But we know about the children of the second marriage as their details are recorded in the family Bible. Moreover, I DNA match to descendants of the surviving son, David Dickson. We do not know what happened to his sister Janet Dickson after the 1861 census when she was with her brother and his family. Did she marry or die?
Peter Dickson was born about 1818 in Greenock. He married twice too, and I am descended from the second marriage to Hannah Lockhart born in Newry, Ireland. We have not found a birth record for him. He married in Liverpool, and his children were born there. He is in the 1841 census with his first born, Robert. We do not know what happened to the children of his first marriage, maybe they all died young. We do know about our branch as we have records for them.
The only clue to William's origins is a death notice pasted into the Bible announcing the death of Robert Dickson of West Coal Ree by his son Thomas Dickson on 16 Nov 1804, funeral the next day. I have been unable to find any details of that burial or death. We do not know whether Thomas or Robert may be his father, or even whether they are other relations. A clue is Peter calling his first born Robert, but his wife's father was also Robert. David used William, David, James, Robert, Thomas, Peter and George for his sons. Peter's sons were Robert, William, Alfred, then James, John, Peter, Thomas and George. Thomas is my grandfather.
I recently found a DNA match at about 4th or 5th cousin level to a person who claims descent from Richard and Elspeth Dickson of Mouswald. His tree does not have sources that I can use to see if his claims are correct. I have looked through much information about the Mouswald Dicksons, including in this Forum, but there is nothing confirmed.
Any pointers would be much appreciated as it would be good to solve this brick wall. Then I can start on Hannah Lockhart of Ireland!

" We have some information from the family Bible including his two marriage dates."
You have the bible?...or a photocopy of the pages in the book?......or you have been told about the inscriptions in the book?
Are the BDM details in the bible written contemporary with the events.....or does it include details written by a later researcher?. A clue might be the date that the bible was printed. What year do you see. Might be inside page...on the spine.......printed for an organisation with...logo...trademark identifier?
And a death notice for a death 1804?......from the 1804 newspaper?.......or found on newspaper archives by a later researcher?
Is this your family?
Census England 1841 Walker Building, Lancashire

At age 23 years this is his second marriage, and son Robert is born in Ireland? Where do you see this to be his second marriage?
I am not seeing this family in England census 1851, 1861. Can you identify them please.

Hi ,
Have you looked at the Scotlandspeople website ?
Church Registers - OPR's , Banns/Marriages.
William Dixon / Janet Cumming , 5th Jan. 1805 Greenock Old or West , Renfrew.
William Dickson / Janet Glen 29th Aug. 1930 Barony , Lanark.
There probably will not be much more info. on the entries.

The Bible is from about 1802. I was the custodian of it for about 40 years, it is now with my nephew. The notice is a printed letter written by Thomas Dickson inviting people to the funeral. It is A4 pasted in the front. I want to identify that Robert and Thomas.
That is my family listed. We have all that information and much more, and copies of the records from Scotland's People and from England transcripts downloaded as well as originals. You cover Peter's first and second marriages in that list. John Henry was his second marriage, he died as did John and James. Peter survived. We do not know what happened to Robert or William born to the first marriage.
The census is in error as it was Hannah who was born in Ireland, not Robert, wrong data entered and not the first time. You have missed her out of the 1841 census, the child who became his second wife, my great grandmother, mother of John Henry, etc. We have all Peter's information except his birth possibly in 1818 according to his death certificate. That is what I was asking for. I have been unable to find his or any possible siblings, and I have trawled through many many records looking. Scotland's People is permanently loaded on my computer!
Peter, Hannah and Peter Jr emigrated to Victoria which is why you cannot find any more children. I have all the children from the Bible and from Victorian records. It is the early records from Greenock or Glasgow that I am trying to locate. I said in my post that we had all the records for Peter's children births. On Peter's death certificate, none of the children from his first marriage are recorded, only those from Hannah who was still alive and lived to see my father born in 1899 in New Zealand, that family having by then emigrated again across the "ditch". I have the New Zealand records.
Information on William is what I am seeking, in Greenock and then Glasgow. The only records I have found on SP are his two marriages.
