Title: How old is the Three Pigeons pub in Oswestry, Shropshire, England.
Post by: Barbara348 on Monday 27 May 19 20:46 BST (UK)
Please note that  I have also put this request on the Shropshire Board where I think I should have placed it at the start so I hope I don't cause any mixups,

Hi, I'm trying to find out how old the Three Pigeons pub in Albert Road, Oswestry,Shropshire is.

My Gt Grandparents ran it for about 11 years from 1902 - 1913 and I would like to know how long the pub had been in existence when they took it over.
Also, does anyone have any idea as to where I might be able to get any record that might exist showing details of their time there, it could fill in some gaps in their lives for me.
Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers.

please note that this post is also on the Shropshire board.

Barbara.

Can you find it on previous census searching by Albert Road perhaps?

Presume you have the 1911 census when they were living there.

It is not marked on the 1874 Town Plan https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/329194/329954/13/101315
Although it is mentioned in the Shrewsbury Chronicle - Friday 20 May 1870 with a Mary Goodwin.

Hi, I had already put this request on the  general board when I realised I should probably have put it on this Shropshire board so I hope this is ok to do.

Have you considered contacting them for finding what the owners know?

The building and the houses  in the road and adjacent road look late Victorian. It was definitely there in 1901. Sarah Williams was the publican then.

If I remember correctly, that part of Oswestry has many Victorian red brick terraced houses. I've not been there for about 10 years or more.

The Local Studies part of the library there was always very helpful.

I don't know if this is the same place, mentioned in 1863

No. The Three Pigeons, Nesscliffe is a different PH.  I've had a few meals in there with my parents in the 1980s. It served good lunches then  :)

The one Barbara is interested in is in Oswestry itself.

Thanks, I'm thousands of miles to the west, but found that on Google, so I thought I'd give it a try.

John Garland, 30, house painter and innkeeper, is living at 4, 5 Cambria (?) Square, public house, in 1871 - before that change in tenancy, or 7 April is date of paper not date of change?

Cambria(n) Square is listed just before Albert Road on the entry. I think it was adjacent or part of the road.  The current Google street view has the Three Pigeons on  the corner of Albert Road and Castlefields: https://goo.gl/maps/6gCDe76NQ9v6beDC6

PS - After looking at the Google maps last night, I went for a 'drive' along the 6 miles of the A483 from Oswestry to the village where I grew up. It was really nostalgic as I'd not been there for over 10 years. The trees had really grown in some places!  As it was taken in Oct 2018, it was up to date.
