Hello, I'm looking for any information on my 2x Great Grandfather Thomas Henry Mayne.
(1870-1912) Going back though my records, I realized I have made a mistake with Thomas's death year. It looks like he died in 1912 at the age of 42
I know he was born in a workhouse in Somerset but I have no record of his parents or siblings. He moved to Wales when he was 15 and worked as a coal miner in Mountain Ash, Wales. In 1895, he married my 2x great grandmother, Mary Jane Cousins (1871-1961). They had 5 children. 2 died as children but the other 3 lived. Apart from my great grandad, I have very limited info on the family after 1911.
Any information about the Mayne family or any hints or tips to help me break this very confusing wall in my tree would be very helpful.
Thanks

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D
First thing to do would be to get a copy of his Birth Certificate.
Birth: March qtr 1869
Clutton Registration District vol 5c, page 648
Main, Thomas Henry
The Mother's Maiden Name is blank - usually indicating an illegitimate birth.
A PDF copy will cost £7, and can be obtained using the above information from:
www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates

Welcome from me as well :)
When you have the birth cert I also noticed that there are two more Main births in the Clutton Reg District on the GRO Birth Index with no mother's maiden name listed
AGNES MAIN
GRO Ref 1867 June Qter CLUTTON Volume 05C Page 652
ELLEN MAIN
GRO Ref 1865 Sept Qter CLUTTON Volume 05C Page 633
And just in case this is relevant I think these girls were living with their grandparents in 1871 in Publow Somerset as below. (I see your Thomas Henry lists his birthplace as Publow in the census) and there is a baptism on 8 Sep 1867 Publow of an Agnes Mayne with mother Ann Mayne -Single Woman
James Main 58 Somerset
Ann Main 46 Publow, Somerset
Ellen Main Granddaughter 5 Publow,Somerset
Agnes Main Granddaughter 3 1868 Publow, Somerset

Hi KGarrad, Thanks for the advice. I will defiantly look into it. :) :)

Hi Kay99, Thanks for replying. I'm a new to family history researching and I could not find a birth record with the surname Mayne. Maybe I need to look at spelling it Main not Mayne. Hopefully, this has given me a new possible lead. So Thank You :) :)

Hi avm228, Thanks for reading and replying. You defiantly have the right family. Frederick Cyril was by great grandad. I know about him but I have no information at all on the rest of his family. I cant seem to find any trace of them after 1911.
I did go back though my research so far and I think I made a mistake with Thomas Henry's death year. I think he died in 1912 as you said. So Thank You for looking as I probably would have missed that mistake. :) :)

Hi trish1120, Thanks for your reply. Wow. You have given me so much to go on. I'm new to family research and to this forum so I'm just trying to get my head around it all the moment. I was getting very confused about the different spellings of Mayne. But your reply has helped me to go forward and to remember that surname spellings could have changed or been missed spelt in the records. So Thank You. This has defiantly helped. :) :)

Yes spellings of surnames were very fluid in those days.
If you need any more help just add any queries to this one.
Trish :)
