My great-great grandparents died on the same day in 1898 in Perth, Scotland, from suffocation. What does this mean? Would it be a gas-related death, or a suicide?

Are there any notes written on the margin of the register? If so, it would likely indicate a reference to the Register of Corrected Entries (RCE) where additonal info can be included on the cause of a death following further investigation.
If there is an RCE, it has hopefully been linked to this image of her death index and should be able to be viewed by clicking on a button at the top of the page. It may however not be available to view online because it is not available or linked this way yet.

Was place of death their own home ?
-
They died at home, so I presume it must have been coal or gas.
There is something in the margin, but I can't decipher it. Do you know what it means?
-
That is the reference to the Register of Corrected Entries. Some notes here www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/birth-death-and-marriage-records/register-of-corrected-entries
There should be a button on the page of image you have viewed that will be the link to the RCE (if it has been linked to the image).

Many thanks for the tip. It says that it was due to smoke. A sad death for the couple.

Certainly was sad :-\

The Perthshire Advertiser 25 November 1898 has a very detailed article about the tragedy.
