Title: Susan Key or Briddy?
Post by: Taylor94 on Sunday 05 May 19 13:27 BST (UK)
Hello
I'm confused as to what my ancestors maiden name was.
I have a George Argent marrying, 1 Aug 1782 Glemsford, Suffolk to a Susan Key as per the 'England Marriages 1538-1973' record set but another record set the 'Suffolk marriage records' and 'Boyds' gives Susan as 'Susan Key Briddy'

Their children are -
Susannah Key Argent - 1783
George Argent - 1785
William Argent - 1787
Sarah Argent - 1790
Brewster Argent - 1793
Jesse Argent - 1797
Asa Argent - 1797
All baptised in Glemsford, Suffolk.
A few of the children have the mothers first name as 'Susan Key' on baptisms and a few have mothers name as 'Susan Key Briddy'
I cant see a Briddy family anywhere?
Her burial gives a birthdate of 1760 and there is a baptism for a Susan Key 4.7 miles away in Clare, Suffolk but in 1766. That would make her 16yrs of age at marriage if likely born near date of Baptism as was normal.

There is however a Susan Key, Widower who marries a Richard Murrells 1775 Glemsford. She is listed as 'of Ketton' which I think is Kedington, 9 miles away from Glemsford.
A Thomas Key dies 1771 Kedington, Suffolk but I can see no marriage.

Any help appreciated

Apologies for this - BUT are you relying on transcriptions of the 1782 marriage or have you seen the actual parish register?  Always better to view the original records than rely on interpretations  ;)

Unfortunately all I have at the minute are FindMyPast, FreeReg, Ancestry etc. They've all served me well so far. FindMyPast uploads copies of the actual registers when possible so those have helped me no end.
It was just this discrepancy I couldn't figure out.

So now that Ancestry have images of Suffolk registers I can now see.

It seems like her surname is 'Briddy' and her first name is 'Susannahkey'??
The clerk inserts 'Key' after her first name Susan on the baptism of their son George in 1785 (I will attach a copy) as if its part of her first name. Then below when noting her full name, the words are closer together but the K is capitalised 'Susan Key Briddy' or 'Susankey Briddy'.
Is this meant to be the name 'Sukey Briddy' and they are taking the 'Su' part as 'Susan/Susannah' fully?
On the baptism of their daughter Susan in 1783 it states 'Susan Key, daughter of George and Susan Key Argent'. It seems like 'Key' is part of her name?

On their marriage in 1782 Glemsford her name is wrote as 'SusannahKey Briddy' by the clerk but she signs as 'Susannah Key Briddy'?

She is one of the Susan Argents who dies in either 1833 or 1834 Glemsford. One has a birthdate given as 1760, the other as 1770. Given marriage at 1782, I'd think its the former one. So a birthdate c1760.

I can't see any families called Briddy.
There is a baptism of a Thomas 'Bruty' in 1770 Glemsford, to a Thomas and Mary.
In nearby Clare, there is a family baptising with the names Brady/Braddy/Bruty but no Susan/Susannah*.

Key appears to be her middle name.  The marriage image has her as Susannah Key Briddy and she signs her name as that.  It is not uncommon to have what would appear to be a surname as a middle name.  Susan/Susannah would be interchangeable

Looking at other entries in Suffolk Briddy I can see entries for the surname Bridy / Briday and maybe even Braday as it would have been written as it sounded with an accent

I think I might have found her.
'Susannah Key Brady, daughter of Henry and Priscilla. Baptised Lexden, Essex. 1761.
Fits with burial age. Brady and Briddy with accent is close sounding.

The reason why I never saw this as on FindMyPast this record is just transcribed as 'Susannah, daughter of Henry and Priscilla Brady'. Only on Ancestry transcription does it include 'Key'. I just purchased the image of the register and it does indeed say 'Susannah Key'. So I'm pretty sure it's her.

That sounds like a good result.

Presumably the marriage of Henry & Priscilla

Henry Brady
Priscilla Coston
Marriage Date   4 May 1760
Marriage Place   Colchester, All Saints, Essex, England
