Can anyone help me find admission records and any other for Agnes Sidaway who died in the Barnhill Poorhouse in Glasgow in November 1885?
I believe The Mitchell Library may hold records but I can’t get up to Glasgow to search.
We think her husband deserted her and trying to work out why Agnes went into the Poorhouse. Illness or was she destitute. Her son also died there in 1875. Was he admitted because he was ill or was Agnes in the Poorhouse for more than 10 years.
Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you!

There is a possible 1881 census entry for Agnes at Barnhill Poorhouse:
Agnes Sideway, 40, Sailor's wife b. Govan

Hi Monica - thank you, yes, I saw this one and it is her.
I was wondering if anyone knew how I could get sight of her records at Barnhill.
Any other information would be wonderful!
Thanks again

Why not contact the Mitchell Library direct and request a search? www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/ExploreRecords/Pages/Poor-Law.aspx

Possibly buried in Sighthill cemetery?
Skoosh.

I contacted The Library but they are too busy and recommended a pretty expensive researcher!
I don't mind paying for a couple of hours for a look up but not a large fee.
I'll see what I can find on Sighthill Cemetery. Thanks Monica and Skoosh.

That is great news. Good luck with the searches :)

Riddrie Cemetery is another possibility, it would just depend on the Poor Inspector at the time, there is a long section of graves with no markers just north of the Molendinar Burn which would fit the bill. Good luck!

The marriage at Monteith Row would be at their ministers house a terrace of town-houses, marriages usually took place at the manse or the brides house etc' The Free Church of Scotland had a mission in Young Street/Tobago Street.

Wow! Thank you so much Merryhow! I really appreciate you taking the time to look. That certainly confirms her husband left her and given us some great detail. Did you get a sense if she was in because she was destitute ir because she was ill?
Also interesting to learn where they were married. Thank you Skoosh!

I was at the Mitchell today and, as promised, had a look at this claim.
Here is my transcription.
City Parish, Glasgow. Poor Relief Claim number 41690. (Archive Ref: D/Hew 10/3/62 - 41690).
Claim made at 11.15 am, 8th November 1880.
AGNES HARDIE SIDEAWAY.
Address - Night Asylum, (Glasgow).
Born - Thistle Street, S. Side. (i.e. South Side of the river Clyde).
Inspector's visit - 10.00 a.m. 19th November 1880. (While she was in the Poorhouse hospital).
Condition - Deserted.
Age - 39 years.
Occupation - Cleaner.
Religion - Protestant.
Disability - Bronchitis. (In 16 ward).
Husband - Charles Sideaway aged 39 years, from Plymouth, a sailor, left her on 10th September 1878. Son of George Sideaway a labourer and Sarah Clement, at 2 Low St, Plymouth.
Applicants parents - William Hardie a weaver and Amelia Walker, both dead.
Married 1st September 1867 in Monteith Row, proclaimed in Tobago Street.
1st application.

Residences -

(Liability) Admitted by Barony L29/699 "send her here" in red ink. 30th November 1880.
18th December 1880 - Removed by Barony.
------------------------------------------------------------
All the italics are mine. There were 3 civil parishes in Glasgow at this time. City Parish, Barony Parish and Govan Combination Parish, each with their own poorhouse.
So, although this is Agnes' 1st application with City Parish, she had already made 2 previous applications with Barony Parish (not found today, so the claims have been lost).
She would have been in the Night Asylum because she was homeless and would have been taken directly to the City poorhouse hospital because she was ill.
There is also a claim for Neil Sidaway in Govan Combination Parish. (Ref: d/Hew 17/889 - 218716)
He is at 21 Marlow St, Kinning Park, (South Side) aged 31 years, married.
Born Plantation district of Glasgow (South Side).
Parents - Ryland Sidway, chainmaker, deceased and Marion McDonald aged 57 years, at 44 Sussex St, South Side.
wife is Jeanie McInnes.
Date of claim was 14th September 1921.

Dear Lodger. My goodness, thank you very much. This information is so detailed and tells a very sad story. One that we suspected, but the details really bring her story to life. Deserted by her husband (who met his next wife in Liverpool and they moved to London - marrying in the July of 1885 BIGAMOUSLY before Agnes died in November of the same year.
It looks as though, having lost both of her children, we was working as a Cleaner but was plagued by Bronchitis, probably not helped by her living conditions and of course, being ill, was unable to work and pay rent. I didn't know her parents were dead so that's additional useful information and makes you wonder why the brother wasn't more help.
You've also confirmed that Charles Sidaway, being from Plymouth is the correct man from our point of view. Having been born in Plymouth, he was in the Royal Navy and then became a Merchant Seaman and marries in Glasgow - so we were wondering if we were right or not, and we were. Thank you.
Thank you for explaining the Night Asylum and the three parishes.
I can now move on to researching more about her living conditions as you've included the useful addresses and investigate her brother, who we didn't know about.
Whatever Agnes may have been, or done, she certainly did not deserve the hardships she faced - and I suspect hers may have been a common story.
I am sharing the information you have round with a contact in New Zealand who has been working on the Sidaways with me and also I have a facebook Group on our family history for my immediate relatives and they will certainly be hearing the story of Agnes and Charles.
I can't thank you enough for the time and trouble you have taken in noting all of this so thoroughly for us. Thank you so much!

Val, lots there for you to follow up :)
Just checking whether you have come across this site in your research www.workhouses.org.uk/
Use the tabs on the left to get you to the Glasgow workhouses in particular (workhouse locations/Scottish poorhouses).

From Lodger's detailed list of addresses, check on Virtual Mitchell to see whether they hold any photos on these streets www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/index.php?a=street&i=A
There are other old photo sites. Virtual Mitchell provides good search options.

Thank you Monica! Great tips. Appreciated.
-
Is there a particular cemetery that the deceased of the poorhouse would be buried in?
-
Short answer - no.
-
@lodger thank you. I did think that wa just wanting to make sure
-
Sighthill would have been the closest but no guarantee they are there

-
Might even be Riddrie?
Skoosh.

Could be anywhere if the family claimed the body and, if the pauper was buried by the parochial board it would have been interred in common ground in an unmarked grave.
-
Hi All, I do not know if this is the right board.
I am trying to find the admission records of a BRIDGET DUFFY, (born Ireland a domestic servant address on her sons
birth cert is 580 Gallowgate Street Glasgow . She had a illegitimate son John Thomson 2 Sept 1868 11 hrs 00 Min's In Barnhills Poorhouse Springburn .I do not live in Scotland so any help would be appreciated.
-
It sounds like she was not in the Poorhouse but in the hospital section as she was residing at 580 Gallowgate Street
-
Hi,
It does state on John Thomson's birth cert 2 Sept 1868 from Scotlands People being born in the poorhouse as does the entry above him
Bridget Duffy was a Domestic at 580 Gallowgate Street. Cannot find her in the 1871 census.
Why would she call him Thomson when her name was Duffy??
Is there anywhere I could view the admissions for Barnhill.
-
Who was the father of John Thomson?
-
Morning,
on his birth it states he is illegitimate, Mother Bridget Thomson. I cannot find anything for George Thomson and Bridget
on his marriage cert to Charlotte Campbell 19 Aug 1891 it states his father as George Thomson , Occ Weaver (deceased) and Bridget Cairns (previously Thomson) WS Duff
Di
-
Poorhouse records are only accessible in Mitchell Library
If she stated her name as Bridget Thomson on his birth record, why do you think she was Bridget Duffy?
Have you found John on 1871, 1881 and 1891 census records?
-
Hi,
There are so many John Thomson's born around 1868 as is the same with Bridget. I have been looking for months now, keep going back and researching all the census and cannot tie anything together.
When she married
Patrick Cairns (1839–1917)
16 Sep 1867 • St John's Catholic Chapel, Portugal Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland she was Bridget Duffy.
She had John Thomson in 1868 ??? I am so confused.
Di
-
Hi Sancti,
Would Mitchell Library do a search for me as I do not live in Scotland ??
Di
-
They may charge a fee but no harm in emailing to ask
What was John's address at time of his marriage
-

John was 23 Charlotte was 19 both at the same address.(he was a widower)

I am appealing to anyone planning on visiting the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. I am looking for information for Margaret McLean nee Dunning who died on the 14th June 1915 at Barnhill Poorhouse, Glasgow. She was the daughter of my great x 4 grandfather's brother. This surname is widely mis transcribed and her father is recorded as John Dinning on her death certificate. It records her residence lodging which is unfortunately illegible apart from number 20. A possibility is Moncur Street as suggested by Rosie17. I clicked on the Mitchell Library link from Monica in a previous post which takes you to the lodgers lists of addresses and it is certainly there. I am assuming that she was taken into the poorhouse after the death of her husband Hugh McLean who was a Pawnbroker but recorded as a Hawker on her death certificate. The assistant governor was the informant so no family member that may have provided some clues.
