Title: Esther or Hester Harding born C1820 Wareham Dorset
Post by: VIK on Monday 29 April 19 15:52 BST (UK)
I have Hit a brick wall with Esther Harding.  According to census she was born 1820 in Wareham Dorset and I am looking for the name of her father/mother.

She married Harry Dash and moved to Portsea, Hampshire  Where she remained until her death in 1918.  I have all her census records and marriage, though father of the bride is not mentioned in the online record.

Does anyone have access to church records for Wareham?

Thanks

Vik

The marriage to Henry Daysh in 1844 names her father as James Harding occ Cordwainer

I think the family has been transcribed as "Hardy" in 1841 St Martin Wareham

James 45
cordwainer
Sophia 45
Henry 20
Esther 21
James 11
Jane 9
Maria 7

The baptisms of all these children are in the name of Hardy so not a mis-transcription of 1841 census.

Found on Dorset OPC - doesn't appear to be any Harding's there at all.

The error here seems to be the name 'Harding' on the 1844 marriage certificate and should indeed be 'Hardy' (perhaps the vicar was having an off-day).

Have just checked birth entries of some of their children on GRO's own index and mothers maiden name shown as 'Hardy', not Harding.

That being so, Esther/Hester's parents were James Hardy and wife Sophia Ash (married 31/1/1811 Wareham):

James bp.1811 (obviously the date must be unreadable but appears between entries for 16th June and 13th July) - bur.28/3/1823
Ann bp.25/10/1812
Jane bp.5/6/1814, bur.3/4/1823
Eliza bp.15/9/1816
Hester bp.22/11/1818
Henry bp.3/4/1821
Hannah bp.25/12/1822
(James and Jane above died 6 days apart in 1823 and no more baptisms until 1829)
James bp.27/12/1829
Jane bp.18/9/1831
Maria bp.16/2/1834

So, Esther was actually a Hardy after all, not Harding, as her childrens births testify.

I agree Annette, I checked some birth registrations yesterday and they were all as Hardy  :)  The signature on the marriage looked like Hardig /Hardiy

Well thanks a million Rose, Millipede and Annette.  I should have known Hardy was a very likely name especially in Dorset.  Also from previous experience when a name is pronounced with the local dialect it often sounds slightly different.  I noticed there is also two spellings of Esther’s married name Dash and Daysh in the census.  That’s given me a lot more to work on for my son’s and partners family.

The stupid thing is I did so much work yesterday, now I can’t locate a lot of it, feeling confused.  I am sure I will find it if not I will go over it again.

Cheers
