Hi, trying to find out who the 2 soldiers are by getting an idea of the date. Would it be around ww1? The back says ‘my uncle Richard is sitting down’ but it doesn’t help at the moment as we don’t know who wrote the note either! Thanks.

Thanks a-l (no closer to finding out who he is but good to know the timeframe).

These look much more like British soldiers. Canadian uniforms had collar badges and different tunics.
The badges might be Royal Welsh Fusiliers and the belts possibly earlier than 1914.
Let the experts in !

This is a Patagonian family with links to north Wales (Caernarfonshire). Extended family links to USA and Canada.
-
Found out who it was, Richard (Ricardo) Jones, born in England in 1881 shortly before the family emigrated to Patagonia. His parents Humphrey and Annie were from North Wales. Not sure how he came to be in north Wales, or the army, though.

Kinmel Camp is an interesting topic in itself.
Some would say there was something of a cover up. There was even a TV docu drama based on the events there some years ago now.
It was a transit camp for Canadian troops.
If you haven't already found it on Wikipedia try below.

Then look at

The riot was a matter of fact and took place in 1919. The camp is just 10 minutes from my house so will be fascinated to see if you can identify them.

Thanks for the links Ian, will look at them now.

Interesting reading Ian thanks. Not something i’d heard about before.
Not sure if it relates to Richard though. An older brother had moved to Canada and settled there but no idea about Richard, thought he stayed in Patagonia. More research needed I think.

You may already have this information.
The American Galleries had branches at:
7 Lime Street, Liverpool;
259 Argyle Street, Glasgow;
19 High Street, Rhyl;
Kinmel Camp, nr. Abergele;
Etc., Etc.
taken from the back of an old photo.
The Camp appeared to have been built in 1914 so that is the earliest date for your photo.

Cheers Ray, nothing further found yet 🤔

Hi Deirdre, It might get more attention on the armed forces board. You could ask a moderator to move it for you.

Thanks Carol, think my biggest problem is working out why he appears to be in Wales. No passenger record found - so far - of him leaving Patagonia 🤔
