I am searching for information on my great, great grandfather William Jose.
He was born in 1827 Cornwall England.
He was married in 1853 to Sophia Thomas inSt Austell Cornwall.
They had two sons John born 1855 and William Thomas born 1857.
They migrated to Adelaide South Australia in 1857 and first settled at Kapunda South Australia.
Sophia died in 1860.
I am trying to find out when and where William died if there is anybody out there that can assist me ?

Welcome to Rootschat.
A possible funeral notice, first column:
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article208969529
Two possibilities:
1865 21/107 JOSE William Kapunda
1907 328/161 JOSE William Adelaide
This has the correct birth year connection:
St Judes Anglican Church Cemetery (Brighton) JOSE William 80y 1907

Can you expand the information you are giving here please.
"...He was born in 1827 Cornwall England."
What is your source for William's age?
"..They migrated to Adelaide South Australia in 1857..."
What ship did they arrive on?
"... first settled at Kapunda South Australia."
And then moved to ....where.....when?
Did William JOSE and Sophia THOMAS have any children in SA?
Did widowed William have a second marriage....where / when / who?
You are descended from......John born 1855?.......William Thomas born 1857?.
Can you please give all the information you have about this family.

Thanks CassT, I have tried to find the Kapunda Cemetery Register on the Light Council link but could not find it - could you provide more info - thanks very much for your help

This obituary of the Wm JOSE who died in 1907 in his 80th year states he was indeed born in Cornwall and arrived in SA in 1848. He left a widow, six sons and four daughters.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/88430262
His death notice states his wife was Mary Jane:
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/57362771
She died in 1910:
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/207204927
This is most likely Mary Jane CHIVELL who married Wm JOSE in SA in 1856 (reg 26/18).
Possible arrival?
JOSE William, Mary TIPPATT, son (d@sea) arrived 1848-12-05 on Baboo from London 48-08-24 via Plymouth
Also mentioned in the newspaper under Baboo arrivals: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/48726486
But if so, what happened to first wife Mary?
The other Wm, of Kapunda, possibly married in 1861 to Mary McINERNEY and died aged 27 in 1865 (b. c1838). Possible death notice for Mary in 1908 - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/208916571
Sophia is possibly the first wife of young William, as she died in 1860.
I feel this younger William in Kapunda is not your gg grandfather? He is too young to have married in 1853.

Great find, Cass!
This shows that buried with William at Kapunda is a 5 month old infant named Richard.
SA BDM shows a birth of Richard JOSE in 1865 to William and Mary Ann (nee JENKINS) in Kapunda - and a death of Richard JOSE in Kapunda in 1865, son of Richard and Mary Ann...so error for father's name.
Both Richard and William show their last place of residence as Victoria ???
Sophia JOSE (d. 1860) is buried in another part of the cemetery. Very nearby is an infant Sophie JOSE and a boy named John Thomas JOSE who died aged 6 - is this the John b. 1855? No death record found for either of them.
-
Could your gg grandfather have died in Victoria?
There is a death for a William JOSE, born Cornwall, in 1870 at Spring Creek, Maldon, Victoria aged 46, son of William and Catherine (reg 7163). Death notice https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/189330750
Worth considering?
PS Assuming Wm Thos JOSE is your g-grandfather, did he move from SA to Victoria and then WA?
-
If he died in Maldon there might be a headstone
try this site http://www.ozgenonline.com/~Carols_Headstones/Maldon.htm
there are headstones for the following Jose family members
JOSE Sarah Ann, John, Margaret
JOSE William, Phillippa, Alfred
good luck Cass

Thank you Cass T and others.
I believe the grave at Kapunda for Sophia Jose is correct. ( the grave details don't appear to state what year they were buried ? ) My research shows Sophia died in 1860 at the age of 24 yrs. They resided at Kapunda.
William and Sophia were married in 1853 at St Austell Cornwall. (I believe his father was named Thomas Jose and his mother was Ann Snell).
William and Sophia came out to Kapunda South Australia on board the ship "Omega" arriving 12 August 1857. William was 30 yrs of age and Sophia was 22yrs of age. They had two sons John aged 2 yrs and William Thomas Jose aged 6 months. ( therefore the William Jose who died at the age of 27 yrs buried at Kapunda could not be him ). William was a miner.
William Thomas Jose was my Great Grandfather who married Tilda Rundstrom in Hotham Victoria and they had 5 children. (3 in Melbourne Victoria and 2 in Broken Hill). Tilda died 1905 at Footscray Victoria. The family moved to Perth in about 1907. William Thomas was also a miner.
One of the children was George Hamilton Jose who was my Grandfather.
My stumbling block is when and where did William Jose die ? ??

Ancestry...Police Gazette Victoria....22 Dec 1877
"...information requested John JOSE ...about 34 years...6 foot 1 inch....miner born Cornwall......reported to have been with his brother a miner at Ravenswood (William JOSE) about two years ago....miner of that name was killed in Queensland. Information to Officer ib charge of Detectives Brisbane......

Sophia JOSE (d. 1860) is buried in another part of the cemetery. Very nearby is an infant Sophie JOSE and a boy named John Thomas JOSE who died aged 6 - is this the John b. 1855? No death record found for either of them.
So is the John buried next to Sophia their eldest son?
Perhaps someone else can find deaths for baby Sophie and young John.
Agree can rule out the Wm buried at Kapunda, the one who died in SA in 1907, and the one in Victoria - assuming parents names are correct on the 1870 Vic death reg AND that you have the right parents for him. (Do you have the UK marriage certificate?)
If he followed the mines, it's possible he went to Queensland. There is a report of a miner named William JOSE who died there in late Dec 1879 attempting to cross a river, age not stated, reg in 1880/C1838: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/169507111

This marriage certificate will be useful to you. How does it name parents....eg. (dec?). Who are witnesses?.
BDM VIC marriage
5239/1883 JOSE William Thomas marr. RUNDSTROM, Tilda

If he died in Maldon there might be a headstone
try this site http://www.ozgenonline.com/~Carols_Headstones/Maldon.htm
there are headstones for the following Jose family members
JOSE Sarah Ann, John, Margaret
JOSE William, Phillippa, Alfred
good luck Cass
Looking at newspaper records, it appears John & Margaret (nee DUFFEY) married in 1866 and Sarah Ann (1867-1872) was their daughter. They had a son named John (b. 1872) who went to WA and another daughter Sarah (b. 1874).
Seems William and Phillippa (nee DOWER) were parents of Alfred (1864-1877). They had another son, William, born in 1855 at sea and died in 1904.
So another dead end (no pun intended!)
-
Thanks Wivenhoe.
You could be right with the marriage certificate for WT Jose and Tilda to un-surface another piece of the puzzle on W Jose.
Police Gazette would not be correct as he is too old. Born 1855, report is 1877 so he would be 22 yrs not 34 yrs.
Thank you Mollipops1
Regarding Kapunda cemetry. Sophia died 1860 and Sophie and John Thomas Jose buried near by.
This is feasible they were her children. What year were they buried ?
I haven't researched John Jose as yet.
I have read and noted a lot from Trove, Ancestry, Find my past, Family search and My Heritage etc, but no luck yet.
If perhaps I can find correct evidence if he re married then this may lead to further information.
-
Do you have the UK marriage certificate of Wm & Sophia?
The 1879 Qld death is a possibility but the death certificate may not reveal much information depending who the informant was (and they are not cheap!).
Unfortunately the cemetery record does not give a death year for little Sophie and John nor can I see a death record that fits in SA BDM. But I feel they must be connected (grave A32 for the children and A34 for Sophia).
EDIT: There is a death reg for a John Thomas JOYCE who died in Kapunda in 1860?? And no matching burial as JOYCE.
-
I have ordered a copy of the marriage certificate for William Thomas Jose and Tilda Rundstrom to see if it has his father William as deceased ?
Appears to be a lot of William Jose's that were miners from Cornwall in S.A at the time.
-
Back again after a long layoff due to personal reasons.
Solid Rock has the correct information on William Jose.
To confirm - William was born in 1827 in Cornwall England. He married in 1853 at St Austell Cornwall to Sophia Thomas. William 26yrs and Sophia 21yrs.
They boarded a ship the "Omega" from Plymouth and arrived in Adelaide 15 Nov 1857 with son John 2yrs, and William Thomas 6 months old.
They travelled to Kapunda S.A for William to mine.
I have contacted the Light Council at Kapunda who advised me that Sophia passed away 4/2/1860 at the age of 24yrs. There are no official records but they advised me (Graham Pike) that there were the graves of John Thomas Jose 24/1/1860 A32, Sophia Jose infant 4/2/1860 A32 Sophia Jose 4/2/1860 A34.
This left William Thomas Jose who would have been just over 2 yrs of age and his father William.
What happened next ??? Where did they go ? Did William re marry ? When and where did William die ? There are so many William Jose's that are miners from Cornwall ! I am at a loss what happened with him and his son ?
William Thomas Jose was my Great Grandfather.
Hoping someone out there can shed some light on him.

Anybody out there researching William Jose born in 1827 in Cornwall England. He married Sophia Thomas in Cornwall. His parents were Thomas Jose and possibly Anne Snell?
William , Sophia , son John 3yrs and William Thomas Jose infant left Plymouth England and arrived in Adelaide 1857. William was a miner so they travelled out to Kapunda S.Australia a copper mining township. In 1860 Sophia, John 6yrs and new baby died. Only survivor was William Jose and the son William Thomas Jose 3 yrs old. There was information that a William Jose married Mary Mcinerney in 12/8/1861 in Kapunda. ?
I do not know what happened to William Jose as in where and when he died?
[/color]
I went to Kapunda in 2022 and found their unmarked graves and a record of who was buried in the cemetery. I have some information on William Thomas Jose his son.

Hi Cass.
Yes I had seen this on Trove also. Begs the question , Did he remarry?
I have been through Trove a number of times and there are so many William Jose's from Cornwall who have died without proper records which is a little frustrating.
